I warned him, though warning is useless,
Thus does the deluded reap adversity.
Thus do the wicked meet their punishment,
Thus does time bring ruin on the unjust.
He was insolent as history records none other,
Insolence which the overwhelmed comes to rue.
We all lived in security, each of us
In his flock, and life was verdant.
Neither was our unity fragmented, nor was our sleep
Disturbed, nor were our hearts perturbed
Until what befell the overwhelmed, from a torrent
Of disasters bursting forth, afflicted us.
What was the fault of children and old women
In homes collapsed upon them?
How did the wealth of the wicked and their party
Avail them, when ruin befell their homes?
Let them now taste the evil of their deeds;
The requital of evil acts is further evil.
Their captive was of no avail when their slain
Perished, nor did their slain avail when captive.
How many a refugee from his family and homeland
Has ruin predestined and led to perdition.
Captivity and slaughter was his fate,
And for his people, destruction and devastation.
O day of Tunis, will you tell us what
You witnessed? For much can you recount.
How the valiant Africans, when battle raged,
Raised their fierce and wild cry!
True is He who called them a folk
While others are but a folk inept and void.
They returned to us with banners of victory held high
And the tails of their glorious steeds dragged low.
They returned, their bags filled with arms
Of the foe, while their resolve remained firm.
The warriors of France's free army, they
Whose valor the day of glory brought to light.
They sacrificed themselves out of obligation
Undeterred by any warning of risk.
Their goal being the liberation of lands
So liberation drew near their lands.
Eager for a decisive day of justice
When their resolve would be made known.
They returned, the annals of war writ
With lines of sublime honor for them.
They returned to us, their chests filled
With joy, while the breasts of their foes simmered.
Say to the foe who saw no glimpse of allied
Arms surging like a raging sea:
Ask your broken army about them in battle,
Your broken army will tell you about them.
The start of a victory, and every beginning
Is thanked, for its conclusion will be praised.
We declared, congratulations on a victory
That encompassed them, while woe and ruin encompassed the others.
Far be it from our Morocco to taste calamity!
May our beloved king reign there as prince!
Victory is linked to his rising, so may
Our prince and king remain victorious!
