1. بعدَ التطلُّع لي بُعَيدَ نِدائي

    أسفَرتُ عن وجهي إلى قُرَّائي

    After longing for my distant call

    I unveiled my face to my readers

  2. ناديتُم فمشَيتُ إثر نِدائكم

    لكِنَّني أمشي على استِحيَاء

    I called and you came after my call

    Yet I walk shyly

  3. وأنا النَّدِيم لمن يطيبُ لسمعِه

    أدَبُ الأديبِ وحكمةُ الحُكمَاء

    I am a companion to those who enjoy

    The wisdom of the wise and the etiquette of the refined

  4. وأنا المُدامُ لمن يبيتُ معاقِرا

    خَمرا لها الأسمارُ خيرُ وعَاء

    I am a drinking partner to those spending nights

    With wine whose vessels are the best

  5. وأنا كَمِرآةٍ لأعمالِ الأنا

    مِ أرى المَليحَ وضدَّه للرَّائي

    I am like a mirror to people's deeds

    I show the good and the opposite to the viewer

  6. فاحرِصث لكي يبدُو محيًاً الفعلِ من

    كَ بِصفحتي في لونهِ الوضَّاء

    So be keen to have your actions appear

    Radiantly pure in my bright complexion

  7. إن الفَصاحةَ مَنطِقي لكنَّني

    في الهجرِ قد لُقِّبتُ بالخَرساء

    Eloquence is my speech but in estrangement

    I was named the mute

  8. وأنا لسَان المَغرب الأقصَى أعَبِّرُ

    عن مَحاسنه لِصقع نَاء

    I am the tongue of the Far Maghreb expressing

    Its beauties to the horizons

  9. وأزوِّد القُرَّاء مِمَّا أجتَني

    من المُفيد بأطيبِ الأنبَاء

    And provide readers what I reaped

    Of the most useful news

  10. وأريكَ من أبهَى المَناظِر كَي تُشا

    هِدَ بالعِيان حَقائقَ الأشيَاء

    And show you the most splendid sights so you witness

    The realities of things firsthand

  11. أنا مَعرِضٌ للشّعر أُظهِرُ حُسنَه

    والشعرُ وحيُ قريحَةِ الشعَراء

    I am a stage for poetry displaying its beauty

    And poetry is the revelation of the poets' ingenuity

  12. لا النثرُ متَّزِنا تَرصَّفَ ذيلُه

    قد كمِّلت معناهُ بالإلقَاء

    Neither is my prose lacking balance or trailing off

    Its meaning is complete with recital

  13. والمُغرِضُون بِرنتُ من أعراضِهم

    وأنا عدُوَّهمُ وهُم أعدَائي

    And I am rid of the agendas of the biased

    Their enemy and they my foes

  14. ما كانَ عندِي أن أرى نورَ الوجُو

    دِ بليلِ تلكَ الأعصُر الدَّهمَاء

    I did not see the light of existence in the gloom

    Of those gloomy eras

  15. حتَّى بدا فَجرا زمانُ محمّدٍ

    زَينُ الإمارَة صَفوَةُ الأُمَراء

    Until the dawn of Muhammad's time arose

    The jewel of rulers, elite of princes

  16. كمُلَت مزاياهٌُ وضَاءت واعتلَت

    فكأنها تَحكي نُجومَ سَماء

    His merits were perfected, shone and ascended

    As if telling the stars of the sky

  17. ومسِّدد الآراءِ بعدُ وهل سَوَى

    لوسيان سان مُسدِّد الآراءِ

    And director of opinions, after that, who but

    Lucien Sanne, director of opinions

  18. فذُّ العباقرَةِ الذي أفكَارُه

    شهبٌ تكادُ تُنيرُ في الظلمَاء

    The genius whose ideas are meteors

    Nearly illuminating the dark

  19. صُغتُ القريض تجيةً لهما معاً

    صَوغُ القريضِ تَحيةُ العُظماء

    I composed this poem in greeting to them both

    Composing a poem is greeting the eminent

  20. وإلى اللِّقاء أحبَّتي وكفاكُمُ

    في كلِّ شهرٍ مرَّتين لِقَائي

    And farewell my loved ones, enough from me

    Twice every month for our meeting
