وافيتُ ربعَ الفضلِ كَم مِن مرَّة
في غَدوَتي وفي مَسائِي والصَّباح
How often have I come to the abode of excellence
In the mornings, evenings, and at dawn,
مُتعَطِّشا للِقاءِ أكرمِ سيِّدٍ
كتَعطُّش الظمآنِ للماء القراح
Thirsty to meet the most generous master,
As the thirsty long for fresh water.
لكنَّ حظِّي لا يزالُ مِشاكِسِي
وعسَى بعطفٍ منكَ يَسمحُ بالسَّماح
But my fortune still resists me,
Though perhaps your kindness may forgive and relent.
ولا تكُ ذا البُطاحَ يا حبِيبي
فقد يقضي على الصَّبِّ البُطاحُ
And do not reject me, my love,
For rejection may destroy longing.
