1. May God water neither Najd’s outlying regions nor Ḥuzwā,

    nor the slope of Naʿmān, nor Radwā’s twin landmarks.

  2. And may the life-giving rain greet no people’s camp at Rāmah,

    nor may the pregnant rainclouds water a landmark fallen desolate.

  3. I yearn—but not for the ben-trees or the protected pasture;

    I love—but neither Suʿād nor ʿUlwā.

  4. A longing for somewhere other than Ḍārij keeps me awake,

    and I pine, praying for rain beyond the utmost reach of distance.

  5. A greeting—not to al-ʿAqīq and its people,

    nor to the traces of dwellers, nor to the one I love;

  6. but to the Two Palaces and the quarters where

    the tales of my grief for him who dwelt there are told.

  7. To you, beloved of my heart, from me a greeting,

    ecstatic—a greeting whose memory makes his sides sway.

  8. Indeed, anguish has captured me since losing one who gathered

    the scattered excellences found in him, in private and in intimate converse.
