My days are filled with anxiety and thought
My nights with sleeplessness and memories of her
Love afflicts me with anguish and sorrow
And so my state remains one of enduring torment
Come, let us ask for the hand of a noble lady
One with wealth and wisdom as her dowry
An old woman, aged yet still a virgin
Wondrous indeed! An old woman yet a virgin
A joy that dispels sorrow
No bosom can contain her along with sorrow
When the wings of night spread wide
Dawn gleams from her radiant visage
I revel with her goblet and her
Why ever not, when she provides me wine and leaves?
A full moon circles about us
Illuminating, fifteen years of age
About the slopes of her waist is a belt
Having no fixed place there
With her cup and glances
Intoxication and sweetness as love dictates
We return it to him white
And he brings it back to us red
When she meets with him, her limbs quiver delicately
Branch of the nadd, morning sun, full moon!
He has cheeks like softened leather
And a mouth and lips like warmed wine
Whenever I seek to embrace him
His eyelids forbid me
Among love’s marvels is that
I flee from him to his glances
He shows me in coming close and drawing apart
What pains and what gives joy
And sheds tears asking from my eyes
Rivers flow down my cheeks
When his shoulder brushed against me
His slender form vitalized me like verdant boughs
None can compare with him, so tender and delicate
Nor any king with my Muhammad, so noble!
