How long will I reminisce of Saadi's talk,

When happiness has broken its covenant with me after him.

And how much do I yearn for the flashes of lightning,

That pass over the dunes from the land of Najd.

And how much do I breathe in the winds that blow,

Bearing perfume from Sheeh and Rend.

With hopes I justify my wandering heart,

    Although justification is not worthwhile.

My two friends, stop for a little while,

Your mounts are on the ruins of India.

    Greet it especially, then greet

The eyes of its female antelopes against the lion.

And if age shows you a fawn,

The light of its forehead guides like the dawn.

Then tell what has appeared to you and say

To it if it was grazing around my covenant.

With what is in the bow of gentleness and softness,

And what is in the lips of coolness and cold.

Pulling from the bitterness of your estrangement in confusion,

Its harmonious instincts full of passion.

Sipping from your strike the wine of ardor,

And burning from your love with the fire of ecstasy.
