Between hearts and eyes warfare rages
Kindled by the glances of does and gazelles
I saw her listless, white cheeks
Upon the brown skin of a withered palm branch
Black yet spilling white blood
And yellow jaundice from her
A fierce battle where an enchantress was broken
Her eyelids torn, forgot the battle of the camel
When the glance of a doe turns, seeking
I forget my death through her fatal glance
What is it with eyes, what is it with me? How often
A glance strips bare, keeping the doe from grazing
O lovers, have you not seen what I endure
Of love, while you are busy with other things
Preoccupied with love, not desiring blame
Nor heeding censure
I do not mourn the encampment if its landmarks
Are obscured, nor weep for the ruins
I do not see lightning as a grinning mouth
Nor say her spittle is like honey
Nor the braids are bending boughs
Nor the lashes those of a dark-eyed gazelle
The doe has not fled from my eyes, embarrassed
The roses still shame my cheeks
Who sees the course of simile as a flaw
Does not claim kohl is in the kohl
