عَينَي ما كانَ آفَتي إِلاَّ هِي
في الوَجدِ بِذا الظَّبِي النَّفورِ اللاَّهي
My eye—nothing but it has been my undoing,
in longing for this skittish, heedless gazelle.
سَأَلتُ البَدرَ هَل تُرى تُشبِهُهُ
في بَهجَتِهِ فَقالَ لا وَاللهِ
I asked the full moon, “Do you suppose you resemble him
in his radiance?” It answered, “No, by God.”
