1. Here is the reproacher—take him yourselves; what have I to do with him?

    I have consented to this passion and this love-mad rapture.

    an exemplar—yet one like me will never divulge his secret.

  4. By God, I never disclosed my passion for you

    or my ardent longing, except through my unchecked tears.

  5. O travelers, within the canopied litters of their white camels

    is a gazelle-fawn for whom the lover’s heart is in turmoil.

  6. You have reached the utmost bounds in cutting me off, so

    neither kindness to one returning to you nor union may be hoped for.

  7. Shall I blame you for your abandonment and aversion?

    This is hardly your first such deed in love.

  8. By you I swear: I have been deprived of what I lament.

    Darkness suffices me—for, bereft of him, how long it is!

  9. My night is like Resurrection Day in this respect: if

    that Day has no night, then this night has no dawn.

  10. O you who ask about my state since their departure:

    leaving the question unanswered is itself its answer.

  11. Within me is a consuming grief that leaves the eloquent speechless;

    so leave its details, and take its sum.

  12. The heart is not among the sound, that its healing might be hoped for;

    while the eye is clouds left to pour unchecked.

  13. When I relate my state, neither the Gleam nor

    the Sentences can Clarify it for me, nor can any Completion.

  14. His sidelock is Scorpio, and his glances

    are Leo; behind his back stands Virgo.

  15. A moon whose dwelling is in the heart—no, in the eye—no,

    in al-Nathra the Hunchbacked lies his noblest station.

  16. How unjust are his glances when he gazes;

    and when he sways, how straight and fair his stature!

  17. A glimpse of a cheek has captured the lovers for him—a cheek

    that spends the night kissed by none but gazing eyes.

  18. Reproach! Though the down of his cheek has not reached his temples,

    how chained it has become within his two sidelocks!

  19. Had I shown wisdom in this, I would have heeded my reproachers’ counsel;

    the approaching days of my good fortune would not have turned away.

  20. By God, what a slender beauty he is! I made him reap

    the honey of love, while from him I reaped bitter colocynth.

  21. None triumphs but his lover—and a youth for whom

    my praise has gone forth, borne onward toward Beauty:

  22. the honor of mankind and religion, the lord whose hands

    pour down the rainstorms of the clouds of generosity.

  23. On the day of gifts, his palm comes to the fore,

    radiant along his path with bounty.

  24. His virtues and his glory have raised for him

    ranks arrayed above the radiant stars.

  25. Time itself takes pride in him—the age whose days

    had never been adorned except by his high glory.
