If the justice of his phantom honored its pledge,
I would be safe from the tyranny of his glance.
A gazelle-fawn—whenever he gazed and swayed,
he shook his supple frame, a straight spear-shaft in its spearhead.
Radiant as the full moon, he appeared when six nights
and eight more of his month had passed.
Shy and swaying—such are the traits
of gazelles and boughs.
Nothing made him sway but the nectar of his saliva
upon his dusky lips; it bent him like a drunken man.
He steals our hearts away; for he possesses beauty,
exquisite qualities, and subtle graces.
Breathing forth the fragrance of pure musk
from his dusky lips, and smiling to reveal pearls.
Oh, what ripe fruit he has—a fresh, radiant cheek,
glowing beneath an enchanting eye!
The paired narcissi of his eyes keep watch
over the anemones of Nuʿmān there.
Arab in attire; Abyssinian is
his hair, though he is of the house of Khāqān.
No sash can settle upon his thirsty waist,
above his full, well-watered haunches.
