Ask the gleam over al-Ḥimā, should it flash from Iḍam,

about me and my condition—about you, and about my sickness.

I pass the night in love with you, O Salm, receiving

the lightning’s flash and yearning for a breath from Salm.

Whenever I scent a breeze from your precinct,

it strips away from me the veil of affliction and pain.

And if you invoke the pledge once made at Kāẓima,

by your right, we have not forgotten the stopping-place at al-ʿAlam.

I watch for a phantom from you; indeed, its visit

lets my whole body, instead of my mouth, drink the wine of consuming longing.

Yet how can I attain a phantom of your image

when my eyelid, for love of you, stays wakeful and never sleeps?

I love your love—and but for that, my soul would not

have wasted away, nor would I have chosen passion over nonbeing.

Take up my tale, for people recite it:

the tale of one whose heart blazes with a searing fire for you.

Do not say, “He has forgotten us.” How could I, when

in love of you I have become flesh laid upon a butcher’s block?

By your right, my heart has shown me none but you,

and your dwelling within it has endured since ages past.
