1. يا برقُ بالأبراقِ عرِّج وَحَي

    عَنَّي بهاتيكَ الأُثيلاتِ حَي

    O lightning, zigzag and flash

    away from me, with those slender maidens, flash!

  2. واستسقِ من تلكَ الرُّبَا عارِضاً

    يروى حديثَ الشَّيحش عن مُقَلتي

    And beg those gentle hills for rain,

    that quenches the tale of love from my eyelids.

  3. إن ظَمئت من دِمنَةٍ أَرضُهَا

    قَالت جُفوني رِيُّ هذا علي

    If you are thirsty in a land whose soil

    my eyelids said: This is plentiful for me.

  4. قف ناشداً قلبيَ في رَبعها

    وُمنشداً ما قُلتُهُ يا أُخي

    Stop, asking my heart in her land,

    and repeating what I said, O brother!

  5. فَلي بها أَهيفُ عَذبُ اللَّمَى

    أيُّ رشيقِ القدِّ أَحوى وأي

    In it I crave the sweetest water,

    O slender, delicate, and beautiful one.

  6. إن سرَّهُ أنِّي من بعدهِ

    من سقميِ قد صرتُ في الثَّوبِ في

    Though it pleases him that after him

    I have become emaciated in my robe.

  7. فوَا الذي يُدنيهِ ما سرَّني

    أنَّي وقد شَطت بيَ الدَّارُ حَي

    Woe to him who brings him what pleased me

    when the house pulled me far from him.

  8. وَجدي بهِ وجدٌ غَدَا هازئاً

    بقيسِ لُبنَى وبغَيلانِ مَي

    My love for him has become mocking

    for Qays and Ghaylan of Mayya.

  9. جَفَا فكلُّ الأرضِ بي بَعدهُ

    ضاقت وضاعت حيلتي من يدَي

    He was unfaithful, so all the land after him

    became constricted, and my stratagems failed me.

  10. عسَاكُما لا بتُّما في الهَوَى

    مثلي مهجُورينِ يا صَاحبِي

    May you two never despair in love

    like me, abandoned, O friends!

  11. إن تَحبسا عيسَكُما ساعَةً

    بهضبِ حُزوىَ أو بوادي أُشَي

    If you detain your two companions for an hour

    at the slope of Huzwa or in the valley of Usha.

  12. وَتنشُرا من خَبرِي ما انطوَى

    بينَ خِيَامِ طُويَت عندَ طَي

    And spread the news I have concealed

    among tents folded at Tay.

  13. ما لِلِّوى لا كانَ يَومَ اللِّوَى

    ظَبيٌ لَوَى دِينَ محبيِّهِ لَي

    Blame is not for love when love

    twisting the faith of its lover.

  14. قَلبِي وَقَد أَضحَى مُقِيماً بهِ

    ما بَالُهُ يِكويهِ بالهَجرِ كَي

    My heart, though it has come to stay with him,

    why does it torment me with estrangement?

  15. أَضلَّ رُشداً فَرطُ عِشقِي لَهُ

    إن قلتُ ما ذلكَ غيٌّ فَغي

    My excessive love for him has led me astray.

    If I say it is not that, then what misguidance!
