Who let the dawn break in the dark of poetry,

And who bent like the soft green twigs?

Who gave the full moon a draught of wine

Until the stars of the sky envied the moon?

Until the gazelles would not look at the wild bucks -

Nay, but slay lovers with a glance.

A fawn enticed me with her glance, and houris

    Ensnare lions with their allure.

Her face is like the moon, her talk

Is pearls that spellbind lovers like the moon.

Who will lend me a moon whose place is in my heart,

And who sends down showers from her eyes to my eyes?

By God, her eyes have worked magic on me, and how

Her slender waist has made me drunk!

Is there a way to the presence of the lithe one, that I might

Pluck a branch and gather the ripe fruits?
