ماذا على ذاتِ اللَّمَى والخالِ

لَو ساعدت منها بطَيفِ خَيالٍ

What of the one with anguish and separation

If an apparition of her aided me

خَطرَت وماست فانثنيتُ مُرنَّحاً

طَرِباً منَ المعسولِ والعسَّالِ

She came to mind and I reeled, bent with love

Confused by the intoxicant, and the honeybee

عهدي بتلكَ الدَّارِ وهيَ مُضيئةٌ

بجميلةٍ بَعُدت عن الأَجمالش

My promise to that house when it was lit

By a beauty, the best of beauties fled

خلَّ انفرادُك يومَ جرعاءَ الحمى

عن نصرِ خلِّكَ غايةَ الإِخلالِ

Your loneliness the day fever racked

Neglected your duty, the greatest neglect

عُج بي فلستَ إذا فَعلتَ بِأَوَّلِ ال

عُشَّاقِ تَعريجاً على الأطلالِ

Return to me, for if with lovers first

You dealt evasively, at the ruins

عِبثَ العُقارُ بعِطفهِا فأمالَها

سُكرانِ سُكرُ صِباً وسُكرُ دَلالِ

The planets in their orbits made her tilt

Drunk with youth’s wine, drunk with coquetry

أدَّت ضفائرُها رسالةَ قُرطهِا

منها مشافهةً إلى الخَلخالِ

Her braids delivered her earring’s message

Whispering, from her mouth to her anklet

للهِ ما أحلى مُقاساتي بِها

ذُلَّ الهَوى وقَساوةَ العُذَّالِ

God, how sweet was my devotion to her

Love's submission, the tormentor's cruelty

يا ضَرَّةَ القمرِ المنيرِ وأُختَ غُص

نِ البانةِ المتأوِّدِ الميَّالِ

O radiant, shining moon, sister of a gazelle

With a supple, gently swaying gait

بأسيلِ خدِّكَ باتَ دمعي سائلاً

ماذا يُضرُّكَ لو أجبتِ سُؤالي

With your cheek's flood my tears flowed all night

What harm if you answered my question?

يا نسمةَ الآصالِ هَل لِسَلامنا

عنَّا إلى الأحبابِ من إيصالِ

O breeze of realization, will you convey

Greetings from us to the beloved?

باللهِ إِلاَّ ما حمَلتِ تحيَّةً

منِّي على ذاكَ الجَنابِ العالي

By God, only that you carried a greeting

From me to that noble spirit
