Without passion's fire, no longing towards Salma

Would have flared, nor lightning struck Thi Salm.

Nor would the passing breeze have shaken boughs

Where it blew gently through the strayer's thorn-trees.

O home between pleasure and reddish sand,

Your days were watered by generous downpours.

    وفيكَ حُزنا الُمنى مع جيرةِ العلمِ

    In you we attained the heights of all we hoped;

In you sorrow for the loved one, with a wise neighbor.

Days when beauty's constellation shone in you

With the splendor of poetry and dark-lashed eyes.

Eyes whose lids were sickened by every roving glance,

But you healed them of their sickness.

Lips that showed us scattered pearls

When they spoke, outlined as in a smile.

I live again in you, O shade of the encampment,

A life that seems to have been only in a dream.

The house becomes, with Numan's blessings,

Ours, and dawns with loved ones in bliss.
