If you are pleased that I remain thus

Captive to passion and infatuation, then so be it

With you this malady is easy and gentle

In your love what harm I encounter

O reproacher, reproach is no blow of a rival

To a man enthralled by love the next day

Mine, not yours, is the loving heart, and my tears

Not your tears that flow, so who would listen when

Mine is the embrace, not assigned by God to one

Who wore away by it, refuge for me to take

My hair night-black, my chin morn-bright

My figure slender, my scent sweet musk

If set against the brilliant moon and asked

Is this it or is this the crescent, I'd say this

O you whose cheek tomorrow goes unveiled

O you whose strength keeps you from being effeminate
