The one for whom love flows abundantly,
And troubles and sorrows flood,
Sleepless, alone,
Burdened by grief and distress.
His body torn by separation,
His cheek adorned by beauty.
Turning away, always turning away.
He is innocent, blameless.
O gazelle, your tears reveal
Eyes lined with kohl, awake.
Whenever his coat trembles,
The branches bow down before him.
He violated his promise,
Setting a precedent the Arabs never approved.
My blood is an offering for his generosity,
And my soul fulfils some of what I owe.
Killer of eyelids, exhausting them,
Babylonian, with a moustache like a dagger.
My death after him is no wonder,
But that I live on, loving him, now that is strange.
