From the left of the sad group, not from their best, appear
For us, by the judgment of love among them, gazelles.
Four for the darting breeze, time has turned with them,
Young, so for God those smooth night companions.
O Saad, stand reciting poetry to me among their playgrounds
Alive, lively gazelles, friendly, gentle ones.
For in the bosoms of the people's tents singers
Without them the joys would not be pure.
For the adornment in its flow a song bends
As doves sang on a bough, turtledoves.
They were healthy and regained for us the sides of their stature
Ailing, inflamed their sick eyes.
How far is patience from a heart clad in sorrow
Maids of Arabia, resistant, firm.
Necks that they have toyed with, thirsty, yearning curves and hips
Generous, the bending South winds make them sway
Kindling in our insides the live coals of passion, the pouring rains.
As though they are the delicate boughs and over them
Shone full moons, illuminating.
The eyes by them have the magic of singers and for thought
The breasts while all are Babylonian.
Those noble ladies are but their glances and those
Mantles are but of Damascus fabrication.
