    Since the troubled throngs departed,

My heart is pierced with burning grief.

The tears of sorrow robbed my patience of beauty,

While a howling wolf ambushed me.

On the rugged cliffs of the sanctuary,

A youth roams, lamenting as he goes.

Jealous of life, his tears flow,

When lightning flashed in the valley below.

How love and its tears are concealed,

If the memory of the flourishing place is painful!

I long for you, O abode on the hilltop.

A breeze from you to me would be most welcome.

I wish time would grant me an hour with you.

If only time would forgive me for longing!

The breeze from the sanctuary’s dwellers

Would turn to me and clasp my hand.

Perhaps those who left would ease my yearning,

Their hearts displaced like troubled waves.

Without them, I’d have no deep sadness,

    No overwhelming calamity or grief.
