يا صِحابي واينَ منِّىَ صَحبى
صرَعتهم عيونُ ذاك السِّربِ
My friends, where are my friends
Whose eyes were dazzled by that flock
يومَ أبدَوا تلك الوجوهَ علمنا
أنما يُشهَر السلاحُ لحَربِ
When they showed their faces we knew
That weapons are only drawn for war
لحظاتٌ أسماؤهنّ استعارا
تٌ وما هنّ غير طعنٍ وضربِ
Moments whose names are metaphors
That are but stabs and blows
إن أُجبْ داعىَ الهوى غيرَ راضٍ
فالصدَى بالنداءِ كُرْهاً يلبِّى
If I answer the call of passion dissatisfied
The echo answers the call reluctantly
هل أرى في السهادِ صُبحاً بعينى
من أرى في الرقاد ليلا بقلبي
Shall I see in the pillow a dawn with my eyes
When I see the night in my heart whilst asleep
أملٌ كاذبٌ قِطافُ ثمارٍ
من غصونٍ ملتفّةٍ بالعصْبِ
A false hope, fruit picked
From branches entwined with rage
كلّما رنَّح النسيمُ فروعَ ال
بان هزَّت أطافَها بالعُجبِ
Whenever the breeze stirred the branches
It seemed they shook with wonder
إِنَّ روضَ الخدودِ ليس لرعىٍ
وخمورَ الثغور ليست لشُربِ
The garden of cheeks is not for grazing
And the wine of lips is not for drinking
أرِنى مِيتَةً تطيبُ بها النف
سُ وقتلاً يلَذُّ غيرَ الحبِّ
Show me a death where the soul is content
And a killing that pleases other than love
لا تَزُلْ عن العقيقيِ ففيهِ
وطرِى إن قضَيتُه أو نحبى
Do not stop visiting her for in her
Is the salvation if I meet my fate or perish
أجميلٌ ألاّ أزورَ ديارا
يوم بانوا دفنتُ فيها لبّى
How beautiful not to visit homes
The day they buried my beloved in them
لا رعيتُ السوامَ إ قلتُ للصُّح
بةِ خِفّى عنه وللعيس هُبّى
If I pastured the camels, I would say to the friends privately and bid the caravan farewell
A stop at the she-camels that gathers
وقفةٌ بالركابِ تُجمعُ فيها
فرحةٌ لي وراحةٌ للرَّكْبِ
Joy for me and rest for the riders
In the palm trees of Al-Arta like does
في كِناس الأَرْطَى شبيهةُ لعسا
ءَ حَماها العفافُ مثلَ الحُجْبِ
Protected by chastity like the veil
You marvel, are these wild beast cubs
يُتمارَى أهذه من نِتاج ال
وحش أم تلك من بناتِ العُربِ
Or these daughters of the Arabs
She emerged targeting him and the full moon faced her
طلعتْ وِجهةً وقابلها البد
رُ فسوَّت ما بين شرقٍ وغربِ
So she equalized between east and west
I accounted everything I picked from her
كلُّ شيء حسبتُه من تجنّي
ها سوى عدّها الصبابةَ ذنبى
Except counting her to be my sin
And the integrity of the chaste who saw
وسدادٌ رأىُ العذول ولكن
ليس يُعِفى الغرامُ من قال حَسبي
But passion does not excuse saying “enough!”
Sometimes the blamer desists
ربّما أقلع المتيَّمُ بالعذ
رِ وزاد استهامةً بالعتبِ
And increases in ransom with reproach
As the prestige of the religion increased with the stubborn caller to the difficult duty
مثلما ازداد في الندَى شرفُ ال
دين لجَاجاً على الملام الصعبِ
A radiant face, a flirtatious mouth and the beauty of the meadow the blossom of grass
It almost raised the scales glorifying us that his property is there for the taking
مشرق الوجه باذل الفم بالنَّيْ
ل وحسنُ الغديرِ زهرُ العُشبِ
Bestower of fine silks, overcoats and perfect Arabian horses
And bright pearls whose drops the ardent lover extracted without beating and striking
كاد أن يرفع الموازينَ إِعلا
ماً لَنا أنّ مالَه للنهبِ
A nobility that belittled those who magnified it
From generous ones whose tales are in books
واهب الخُرّد العطابيلِ والكو
مِ المطافيلِ والعتاقِ القُبِّ
He wet gratitude in the drink of his hands
So he greeted it with a moist tongue
وبُدورِ النُّضار أعجلها الطا
لبَ تِبرا عن سبكها والضربِ
May Allah not quench a group whilst he is among them
Why do they hope for rain from the clouds?
شرفٌ صغَّر الذي عظَّموه
من كرامٍ أخبارُهم في الكُتْبِ
Men knew his superiority so they gave
The keys to the brave, audacious warrior
غمَس الشكر في سلاف أيادي
ه فحيّاه باللسان الرَّطْبِ
Molded with the dye of glorious deeds so he can repeat them
And the Prophet is not like Al-Mutanabbi
لا سقَى الله معشرا وهو فيهم
لِمَ يَرْجُونَ بارقاتِ السُّحبِ
Whoever has two Campaigns to Mecca from Ali
Will return repenting from the lofty Al-Dhulayb
عرفَت فضلَه الرجالُ فألقت
بالمقاليدِ للخُشاشِ النَّدبِ
How can he not fill the saddlebags with thanks Whilst he is raised in the shop of generosity?
He launched his raids on the dwelling of misery
طبَعوا بَهرَجَ المعالي ليحكو
هُ وليس النبيُّ كالمتنَبِّى
Whatever he suggests, he obtains and enslaves
Ambitions that do not consider supremacy supplication
من له رِحلتا قريشٍ إلى المج
د تؤوبان من علاءٍ بكسبِ
Or are lowered unto the shooting stars
Spears whose branches are in abdomens
كيف لا يملأ الحقائبَ شكرا
وهو في متجَر المكارم يُربى
Swords whose roots are in soil
Racers, outstripping the winds if one day
شنَّ غاراتِه على عازبِ السؤ
ددِ ما يقترِحْ يحوز ويَسبي
A wager was placed between them from a direction
A nobility enemies pointed to
هممٌ لا تَرى العلَّو علوّا
أو تُدلَّى على النجوم الشُّهبِ
And the guide to ruins is the barking dog
Verily this protector disabled fate
طاعناتٌ فروعُها في الدَّرارِى
ضارباتٌ عروقُها في التُّربِ
And manifested a severed forelock
He sharpened the opinion with experiences until It is purer base and more eloquent speech
سابقاتٌ وفدَ الرياح إذا يو
مُ رِهانٍ أجراهما من مَهَبِّ
And protected in his encampment a wilderness of wild beasts
With his management and home of the wolf
شرفٌ دلَّ حاسدُوه عليه
ودليلُ القِرَى نُباحُ الكلبِ
Of gifts he is brought closer to the rich pasture
Generously pouring without rage
إنّ هذا الهماَم قد عطَّل الرم
حَ وأبدَى كَهامةً في العضبِ
From sincere that gives you cream without stirring
And enriches you from straining the crumbs
صقَل الرأى بالتجاربِ حتى
هو أنقى مَتنٍ وأذلقُ غربِ
And when the firewood collector of evil confronts him
He finds at his side the firewood of war
وحمَى في رِباعه غابةَ اللي
ث بتدبيره وبيتَ الضبّ
Dark asDrug ash he sends into every stab
Like a rain cloud
ذو هباتٍ يُدنى لمحتلبِ الخي
رِ لَبوناً تِدُّر من غير عَصبِ
And the ambiguity of the two edges
From the essence of death, a confidante of souls forcing them
من صريح يعطيك زبداً بلا مخ
ضٍ ويُغنيك عن تعنّى الوَطبِ
And an ash-colored steed milking vigor
In a hoof like a fortress
ومتى يعترضه محتطبُ الش
رّ يجدْ عنده وَقودَ الحربِ
Enraging enemies seeking victory
From a heart and hidden thoughts
أسمرا كالرشاءِ يُرسله الرامحُ
في كلِّ طعنةٍ كالجُبِّ
He has the most potent cure for matters
And remedying affairs is the best medicine
وغَموضَ الحدين من جوهر ال
موت مُوَلًّى على النفوس لغصبِ
His determination always despite the nights
A stored power restraining the discourse of war
وسَبوحا قَوداءَ تحتلب الجِر
يةَ في حافرٍ كمثلِ القعبِ
He is either the leather bag its jingling awakened its carrier
Or the bent over old coat
لوذعىٌّ تهيج منه الأعادي
قانىءَ الظُّفر من فؤادٍ وخِلْبِ
The problems require from him words
Undertaking melting the solid hearts
عندَه للأمور أشفَى دواءٍ
وعلاجُ الشؤن خيرُ الطِّبِّ
A ruler, if the jealous enemy claimed him
Would attribute him to Aamir bin Zarb
أبدا جزُمهُ برغم الليالي
غُدَّةٌ أمسكتْ لَهاةَ الخَطْبِ
You O Muhammad are to the people
Like the one sent from the family of Ka’b
هو إما الذُّعافُ رقرقه الص
لُّ لحاويهِ أو هِناءُ النُّقْبِ
That one was spring when the debt was scarce
And you are the spring in the year of drought
تقتِضى المشكلاتُ منه مقالا
يتولَّى حكَّ القلوب الجُربِ
God has illuminated a star for the caliphate from you
Based on your endless happiness it signals
حِكَمٌ لو أصابها حىٌّ عَدوا
نَ ادّعَوها لعامرِ بنِ الظَّرْبِ
A state, since you were named its pillar in it Enriched by its pillar and palm trees
It has audacity with bravery protecting it
إنما أنت يا محمدُ للنا
س شبيهُ المبعوثِ من آل كعِب
It has booty with honesty guarding it
And if a flag was raised by your acceptance
ذاك كان الربيعَ إذ قَحَط ال
دِّينُ وأنت الربيعُ عامَ الجدبِ
It marches victoriously with might
How could the bracelets not wear jewelry
أطلعَ الله للخلافةِ نجما
منك عن سعدك المخلِّد يُنبِى
On a hand preoccupied with relieving hardship
It comforted an eye with festivals and feasts
دولةٌ مذ دعيتَ فيها عميدا
غَنِيتْ من عَمودِها والطُّنْبِ
Where the beloved soul meets their lover
One cannot bear your hands’ judgments
فلها السَّرحَ بالبسالةِ يحمِى
ولها الفىءَ بالأمانةِ يَجى
So he came to you seeking a little earth O gathering is incitement to travel
And living near is for settling
وإذا رايةٌ أُمدتْ بإقبا
لك سارت منصورةً بالرُّعبِ
Together under a shaded pavilion weaved
With the softness of an ardent heart
كيفَ لم تَلبَس السِّوارَ حُلِيًّا
في يدٍ أُولعت بكشفِ الكربِ
Receiving happiness from every valley
And enjoying bliss from every pathway
قَرَّ عينا بمهرجانٍ وعيدٍ
أحفا بالحبيبِ نفسَ المحبِّ
Whenever the nights were generous with art from it
Their days poured with striking
لم يُطقْ واحدٌ قضاءَ أيادِي
ك فوافاك مستغيثا بِتِرْبِ
I do not bestow unto it a gift like me
But my gifts are a slave’s thanks to their Lord
حَوْلُ هذا مستوفِزٌ لرحيلٍ
وثناءٍ وطَوْلُ هذا لقُربِ
Without you I would not have recited the ode of poetry
Nor would my pearls belong to threading
جُمعا في غِلالةٍ نسجِ أيلو
لَ لها رقّةُ الفؤاد الصبِّ
Except when I chide rhyming
It goes astray to the path of love
فتلقَّ السرورَ من كلّ وادٍ
وتملَّ النعيمَ من كلّ شِعْبِ
And old praise is for honor keeping
And mixed praise is some foxiness
كلّما جادت الليالي بفنٍّ
منه صابت أيامُهنّ بضربِ
My benefit in what I contained is little
If only the ignorant despoiling my looting would understand
لستُ فيه أُهِدى هديّةَ مثلى
بل هداياىَ شكرُ عبدٍ لربِّ
Look at the bejeweled cup offered
Let me fold it, pleased with moisture
أنا لولاك لم أحُكْ بُردةَ الشِّع
ر ولا كان لؤلئى للثَّقبِ
Why does time dethrone my ancestors
And they are from your strong refuge on the mountainside
غيرَ أني إذا زجرتُ القوافي
فيك خبَّت على طريقٍ لَحْبِ
Do you see me like the planets waning
Their course as the axis turns?
والمديحُ العتيقُ للعِرض واقٍ
والمديحُ الهجينُ بعضُ الثَّلبِ
It is an obstacle for tightness that appeared Then spills into a vast expanse
قلَّ نفعي بما حويتُ فيا لي
تَ ذوى الجهلِ يستبيحونَ سَلْبي
انَظُر المنهلَ المصفَّقَ مَورو
داً فأطويهِ جازئا بالرَّطْبِ
لِمَ يستنزلُ الزمانُ جدودى
وهي من عزِّك المنيع بهَضْبِ
أتُراني مثلَ الكواكب أبطا
هُنَّ سيرا ما دار حولَ القُطبِ
إنها عَقْبةٌ لضيقٍ تجَلَّى
ثم تُفِضى إلى مجالٍ رَحبِ
