1. حرامٌ علىَّ طُروقُ الديا

    رِ ما دام فيها الغزالُ الربيبُ

    It is forbidden for me the does of the forest

    As long as the elegant gazelle is in it

  2. أشاهد في جانبيها هواىَ

    لغيري وماليَ فيه نصيبُ

    I see my love for another

    In its sides, and I have no share in it

  3. وقد كان فوضَى فكان المنى

    تعللنى والتمنِّى كذوبُ

    There was chaos, so there was longing

    Excuses bothered me, and wishing was a lie

  4. فلمَّا تصيَّده قانصٌ

    ألدُّ على ما حواه شَغوبُ

    When a fierce hunter hunted it

    The most severe was what it contained, angry

  5. تداويتُ من مرضٍ في الفؤاد

    بيأسىَ واليأسُ بئسَ الطبيبُ

    I healed myself from a disease in the heart

    With despair, and despair is the worst doctor

  6. فقد وهبَ الثأرَ ذاك الحريصُ

    ونام على الحقدِ ذاك الطلوبُ

    For that greedy one gave vengeance

    And that craver slept on hatred

  7. ومن عزَّ مطلبُه مُهمَلا

    فكيف به وعليه رقيبُ

    And whoever neglected his quest

    How can he be when there is a guard over him?

  8. فلا حظَّ فيه سوى لمحةٍ

    تُنافس فيها العيونَ القلوبُ

    So I have no fortune in it but a glance

    In which eyes compete with hearts

  9. وُجود الأمير بأمثاله

    فكلُّ بعيدٍ عليه قريبُ

    The generosity of the prince is like it

    So every far one is near to him

  10. وهوب الجيادِ وبيضِ القِيا

    ن والظبي يرتجُّ منه الكثيبُ

    The bestowing of steeds, and white banners

    And the gazelle that bleats from it, the hill

  11. وعَقَّار كُومِ الصَّفايا إذا

    تعذَّرَ عند الضُّروع الحليبُ

    And a perfume seller when

    Milk was scarce for the milk-giver

  12. تَعيثُ الأخلاّءُ في ماله

    كما عاث في جانب السِّربِ ذيبُ

    Vagabonds roam his money

    As a wolf roamed the side of the flock

  13. وما يسحَرُ القولُ أخلاقَهُ

    ولكنّه الكرمُ المستجيبُ

    And words do not charm his manners

    But he is generosity responding

  14. ظفِرتَ وويلُ امّها حُظوةً

    ببدرٍ تُزرُّ عليه الجيوبُ

    You got, and woe to its mother, an intimacy

    With a full moon that purses overflow on him

  15. إذا رُدِّد الطَّرفُ في حسنه

    أثار البديعَ وماج الغريبُ

    When the glance was repeated in his beauty

    It aroused the unprecedented and the stranger was infatuated

  16. عُبوسٌ يُولَّد منه السرورُ

    ومن خُلُقِ الخندريسِ القُطوبُ

    A gloom from which joy emanates

    And the nature of the smiling sleepyhead

  17. وتيهٌ كأَنْ ليس بدرُ السماء

    يُلمُّ الكسوفُ به والغُروبُ

    And confusion as if the full moon in the sky

    Is not eclipsed and does not set

  18. ولولا حياءٌ تقمَّصتُهُ

    لأجلكَ حجَّ إليه النسيبُ

    And if it were not for shyness I wore for you

    The loved one would have made pilgrimage to him

  19. سأطوِى على لَهبٍ غُلَّتى

    إلى أن يُعطَّلَ ذاك القَليبُ

    I will endure raging flames

    Until that changer stops

  20. وأعلمُ أنْ سيباحُ الحمى

    إذا أظهر الشَعراتِ الدبيبُ

    And I know the protected land will be violated

    When the slight hair appears

  21. طِرازٌ ينمنُمِ في العارضيْن

    يُزَّينُ منه الرداء القشيبُ

    A model that slumbers in the cheeks

    From which the gown adorns the gray hair

  22. فما ذلك الحسنُ مستقبَحا

    بشَعرٍ ولو لاح فيه المشيبُ

    So that beauty is not ugly

    With hair even if grayness shows in it
