1. Alas for a people, handsome in form,

yet stuffed with the dispositions of livestock!

  2. In the fool's eyes they are adorned

by the ornaments of wealth and the garments of plenty.

  3. We chanted to them in eloquent verse,

but they admired nothing in it except the melody.

  4. And what plunged into their ears

was no different from the plucking of treble and bass strings.

  5. And they made their excuse for withholding our reward

    their lack of understanding.

  6. And suppose they did not understand what we say:

where, then, is openhandedness, and where is generosity?

  7. Did our writing on sheets of paper delude them—

"We are the slaves, and we are the servants"?

  8. And for less than that, faces are scorched,

and eyes are filled with grit, and skins are torn.

  9. So if they repent by bestowing bounty,

we shall sustain praise as one sustains kinship ties.

  10. And if they persist in their meanness,

we shall consign their front teeth to remorse.

  11. When they overstep the bounds in withholding,

we cast off modesty and go beyond lesser sins.
