هززناكُمُ بالمدحِ نَجنِى ثمارَكم

هززناكُمُ بالمدحِ نَجنِى ثمارَكم

ونحِلُبُ من اخلافِ وُجدِكُمُ وَفْرا

ونحِلُبُ من اخلافِ وُجدِكُمُ وَفْرا

We shook you with praise to gather your fruits,

We praised you hoping to reap your fruits

And milk abundance from the teats of your wealth.

And milk your ancestors' glory and honor

فلم نحظَ من رِبح الثناءِ بطائلٍ

فلم نحظَ من رِبح الثناءِ بطائلٍ

فرُدُّوا كرأس المال أو بعِضه شِعرا

فرُدُّوا كرأس المال أو بعِضه شِعرا

But we gained nothing worthwhile from the profit of praise;

Yet we gained nothing worthwhile from praising you

So return our verse as the principal, or part of it.

So return the capital or at least some of it in verse

فإن أنتمُ لم تنصفونا فإننا

فإن أنتمُ لم تنصفونا فإننا

سنقتصُّ من أعراضكم ذلك الوِترا

سنقتصُّ من أعراضكم ذلك الوِترا

For if you do not treat us fairly, then we

For if you do not treat us fairly then we will

Will avenge that wrong upon your reputations.

إذا المنع والإعطاءُ كان خيارُه

إذا المنع والإعطاءُ كان خيارُه

إليكم تخيرَّنا المذمَّةَ والشكرا

إليكم تخيرَّنا المذمَّةَ والشكرا

When the choice between withholding and giving

When the choice of giving or withholding

Is yours, we choose between censure and thanks.

Lay with you, we chose blame and thanks

فلا تحسبوا أنَّا إذا نلتم الغنَى

فلا تحسبوا أنَّا إذا نلتم الغنَى

ولم تُشركونا نُوسعكم عذرا

ولم تُشركونا نُوسعكم عذرا

So do not think that we, when you attain wealth

So do not think that if you gain riches

And do not share it with us, will make ample allowances for you.

And exclude us, we will tolerate you
