لم أبكِ أن رحلَ الشبابُ وإنما
أبكى لأنْ يتقاربْ الميعادُ
I did not weep because youth had departed, but rather
I do not weep because youth has departed
I weep because the appointed time draws near.
But I weep because the time of departure draws near
شَعرُ الفتى أوراقُه فإذا ذوَى
جَفَّت على آثاره الأعوادُ
A young man's hair is his leaves; and when it withers,
The hair of a young man is like leaves, and when it withers
The branches dry up in its wake.
The branches above its traces dry up
