1. O Abu al-Khayr, who bestows every good

    and clothes his arrows in the feathers of sound judgment;

  2. and to whom the people, one and all, have entrusted

    the keys of writing and accounting;

  3. and who, if he desires an eloquent composition,

    does not lack decisive speech.

  4. Virtues through which beneficence is ascribed to him,

    as rain is ascribed to the clouds.

  5. He showed us every marvel, until

    he showed us, in his possession, the color of youth:

  6. ink—if a place contains it,

    I would take its resting place for a raven's nest.

  7. So I do not know whether from liquefied kohl

    it took shape, or from the darkness of molten night.

  8. The gray-streaked locks say, when

    they see it: 'Would that this were some of my dye!'

  9. And departure has drawn near; there is no staying,

    only strapping the saddles onto the riding-camels,

  10. to a king situated between dry land

    and a brimming sea of towering billows.

  11. So I shall find no companion there

    but fish paired with desert lizards.

  12. So supply me with a measure of ink

    to sustain me until my return.

  13. For if you grant me pens as a favor,

    then food is no substitute for drink.
