1. How noble is the face of the hurrying rider!

    He tells us that tomorrow we shall meet.

  2. My heart's covering—take it as a robe of honor;

    For the yearning lover owes a reward for glad tidings.

  3. Did they, I wonder, harness the echo to carry

    The captive's message to the one set free?

  4. And did they question the dream-phantom and say to it:

    “Do you know who among our lovers remains?”

  5. I am the one enfolded, that morning at al-Naqa,

    By the snares of captivity, and I have not been freed.

  6. And whenever their archer lodged

    His arrows, I told him, 'Nock another!'

  7. How skillful is the cook you have!

    He cooked me through with fire, yet did not burn me.

  8. The abode [uncertain reading] is nothing without its dwellers;

    And the east's radiance comes from the sun.

  9. I vow the slaughter of sacrificial camels if, at dawn,

    Their tents—those hillocks of al-Abraq—

  10. Are like ostrich nests, and their eggs

    Are guarded by white swords and blue spearheads.

  11. O drawer of water, may your thirst never be quenched!

    How much water do you draw from the well of this heart?

  12. Water's nature is to flow downward—so why

    Does the water of my heart forever rise?

  13. You would think my eyelids held clouds, or

    The bounty of Amid al-Dawla, the lavish giver.
