They said: Two viziers—that one's star has fallen,
They said two stars of passion rose
and this one's star has risen, ascending.
And this star climbed to highest point
Thus fate is seen bringing low
Thus is the fate seen lowering
at times, and at times it may be seen raising high.
Now and then seen elevating
I said: This comparison—woe to you!—is mere glitter;
I said your analogy is wrong
its substance will not take the stamp.
Its essence bears no imprint
This one came from Amid, exalted,
This came from noble rising
and that one came from Fars, submissive.
That from a vanquished horseman
What a gulf between one appointed from above it,
What a gulf between one ordained
who then settled peacefully at its center,
Who fell from its center pleading
and one promoted from below it,
And one the wheel raised up
who then fell from its summit, tumbling down!
To glory from its summit
Let us, between ourselves, set aside the hidden,
Let us discard what's between us
and draw on what is apparent and widely known:
And benefit from open ways
'Ibn Jahir and your Ibn Darast'—
Son of Jahir and Darstikum
in what wording could that please the listener?
With what words please the hearing?
Is his heart not sealed—
Is it not imprinted on his heart
the man who took a he-goat for a fearsome lion?
Who thought a goat a roaring lion?
