1. Our gain from al-Māsh is as was

    said of old: “No perfume after ʿArūs.”

  2. The people carried off its choicest things,

    and we were invited to the low and vile.

  3. No worthy deed by which remembrance grows fair,

    nor an empty purse made full.

  4. And if, in this affair, I lack these

    two, my rising and my sitting are alike.

  5. Before us, Tabāla was offered to

    al-Ḥajjāj, who spurned it with a scowling face.

  6. And he took charge of the two Iraqs, braving

    a war's fire that dwarfed the War of al-Basūs.

  7. A stay in Hell is more fitting and preferable

    to a journey that leads to dishonor.

  8. For it was to escape humiliation before

    Adam that Iblīs took flight.

  9. Do you imagine me jostling with people

    appointed to it through sword and mace?

  10. Among one of foreign tongue and another

    deficient, one mad, and one a dissembler,

  11. and a potbellied man and a leper—these are

    two ailments that diminish every chief's standing.

  12. A company for whom censure does not reach

    its full measure when I describe them as billy goats.

  13. The height of their learning and the fullness of their

    merit lie in fine mounts and clothes.

  14. What worth is a young man's pride in a new garment,

    when beneath it his honor is threadbare?

  15. And wealth is not in silver or

    gold, but in dignity within souls.

  16. Time has a custom it follows:

    tails come to be above heads.

  17. I have acquired what makes striving

    succeed; who will help me with my ill-starred fortune?

  18. And if I have the true affection of Sharaf

    al-Dīn, bliss will undertake to slay misery.

  19. I have secured myself, O vicissitudes of the nights,

    through his favors; be foolish, then, or wise.

  20. All I wish is mine: a garden and a pool,

    and merriment from his welcoming abode.
