O son of the prince before whose onslaught bowed
the heads of non-Arabs, from pole to pole;
Nay, O son of the defender of Arab honor, armored
in prudence and resolve amid white blades and shields;
Nay, O son of him whose compelling proofs silenced,
in debate, the champion stallions of learning and letters.
The seven seas set themselves against his bounty, in
ignorance; they returned, churning their waves in rage.
Enough for you are those rhymed cadences of his, which overflowed—
their springs with wine, bearing in it the tang of blows.
Were a draught of it to course through the head of one scaling
a mountain, he would fly, and the mountain sway with rapture.
God is greatest! Time has no evil deed
that has not been effaced since the time of that magnificent Arab—
the ascetic, devout, ever-fasting, possessed of piety—the
steadfast upholder of a nation in Islam after a prophet.
Indeed, you spring from a house—how devoted it was to the Faith!
How much excellence it amassed through ages past!
No wonder you obtained a hoped-for favor from our sovereign,
so long as you are known as the best son of the best father.
Swiftly it came to you, O scion of al-Siddiq—
the finest of ranks, seeking the choicest lineage:
one whom descent through Abu Bakr’s loins links in its chain,
and in whom the authoritative Book bears witness to glory.
The stars of the celestial spheres have come to envy him.
Do people marvel that they adorned him with lofty ranks?
For whom are glory’s titles kept in reserve, if
they are not bestowed on you—you whom God gave to the Arabs?
