1. نظرةٌ فابتسامةٌ فسلامٌ

    فاحترامٌ فخشيةٌ فرجاءُ

    A glance, then a smile, then a greeting;

    then respect, then awe, then hope;

  2. فأَمانٍ فدربةٌ فاتّصالٌ

    فكلامٌ فموعدٌ فلقاءُ

    then wishes, then familiarity, then contact;

    then conversation, then an appointment, then a meeting;

  3. ففراقٌ يكون فيهِ دواءُ

    لقلوبٍ قد نَدَّ عنها الوفاءُ

    then a parting in which lies a cure

    for hearts from which fidelity has strayed—

  4. تطلب الوصل لا الغرام فتسلو

    لا ثباتٌ على الهوى لا بقاءُ

    hearts seeking union, not true love, and so finding solace;

    no constancy in passion, no endurance.

  5. كل يوم لها غرامٌ جديدٌ

    فيهِ وصلٌ فسلوةٌ فشفاءُ

    Every day they have a new love,

    with union, then solace, then recovery;

  6. فانصرافٌ عن الفراغ لسكرٍ

    فاعتلالُ ففافةٌ فشقاءُ

    then a turn from emptiness to intoxication,

    then illness, then poverty, then misery.

  7. تلك حال الانذال في كل صُقعٍ

    يكثرون الاهواءَ وهي هباءُ

    Such is the state of the base in every land:

    they multiply their passions, though these are dust.

  8. يعشقون الغادات هنَّ هناءُ

    يعبدون اللذَّات هنَّ بلاءُ

    They fall in love with fair maidens: they are bliss;

    they worship pleasures: they are affliction.

  9. لا كهذا غرام شهمٍ نبيلٍ

    قد تجلَّى منهُ عليهِ ضياءُ

    Not so the love of a high-minded noble,

    upon which his radiance has shone.

  10. تعشق الروحُ مثلها لمعانٍ

    هي ظُرفٌ ورقَّةٌ وذكاءُ

    The soul loves one whose brilliance matches its own:

    she is grace, tenderness, and intelligence,

  11. وجلالٌ وهيبةٌ وحياءٌ

    ذاك عشقٌ لا يحتويه فناءُ

    majesty, dignity, and modesty.

    That is a love no extinction can encompass.

  12. تتلاقى الأرواح قبل جسومٍ

    لفراقٍ يكون منه الداءُ

    Souls meet before bodies do,

    only to part—and from that parting comes the malady.

  13. ذا تلاقٍ يكون فيه عفافٌ

    فيهِ منهُ على الهوى رقباءُ

    This is a meeting in which there is chastity;

    in it, from within him, sentries watch over passion.

  14. ينقضي بين عطفة وحنانٍ

    وحديثٍ هو النُهى والهناءُ

    It passes in tenderness and affection,

    and conversation that is wisdom and delight;

  15. فاشتياقٌ فغيرةٌ فظنونٌ

    فعتابٌ فوحشةٌ فجفاءُ

    then longing, then jealousy, then suspicions;

    then reproach, then loneliness, then estrangement;

  16. فسهادٌ فلَوعةٌ فاكتئابٌ

    فنحولٌ فزفرةٌ فبكاءُ

    then sleeplessness, anguish, then depression;

    then wasting, a sigh, then weeping;

  17. فرجوعٌ الى الحقيقة وَجداً

    هكذا هكذا يدوم الولاءُ

    then a passionate return to truth.

    Thus—thus does fidelity endure.
