يا أيها العَلَمُ الذي عَرَجَت بهِ

فوق المجرَّة والسماك قصائدُهُ

O you, the banner under which

Poetry ascended above the galaxy, and its verses,

والكاتب العربيُّ مَن ملأَت حشى

الاوراق تثمرُ كالغصون فوائدُه

And the Arab writer, whom the breasts

Of papers bear fruit like branches, and their benefits,

والعالِم النحرير ذو القلمِ الذي

قد كلَّلت هامَ الفخار فرائدُهُ

And the soft writer with the pen that

Crowns the pride of pottery, its masterpieces,

فنما بهِ العلمُ الصحيحيُ ومُتّنَت

في ندحة الأَدب الصريح قواعِدُهُ

So the true science grew by it and took root

In the plain of literature, its firm foundations,

عرَّبتَ عن هُومير اشعاراً زهت

حسناً طواها الدهر وهي خرائدُهُ

You translated Homer's poems, which adorned,

Beautifully, time enveloped them and they are its remnants,

فكسوتَ قامتها طرازاً مُعلَماً

يبقى ولا تبقى البدورُ حواسدُه

So you dressed its form with conspicuous elegance,

That remains when glories do not remain out of envy,

ونشرتَها بين الملا أعجوبةً

في طيّ سِفر تستباحُ نواهدُه

And you spread it among scholars as a wonder

In the folds of a book whose meanings are sought,

حُورٌ على سُرُرٍ بسدرة منتهى

الاعجاز يعشقها العلى وتراوِده

Houris on beds at the Lote Tree, the utmost

Of wonder, loved by the Most High, and courting Him,

ظلَّت لها الشعراءُ تنشدُ بهجةً

والافقُ يرقصُ والنجوم تساعده

The poets remained reciting joy for it,

And the horizon dances, and the stars help it,

والنهر صنجٌ والنسائم مَزهرٌ

والأيكُ عُودٌ والحمام ولائدوه

And the river is a harp, and the breezes flowered,

And the branches are lute, and the doves befriend it,

والارض سَكرَى والعُبَاب مُصفّقٌ

طَرَباً وألحاظُ الأثير تشاهدوه

And the earth is intoxicated, and the haze clapping,

Enraptured, and the gazes of the ether witness it,

والطيرُ يصدحُ والرياض مسرَّةً

تفترُّ عن ثغرٍ تضيءُ قلائده

And the birds chant, and the meadows are delighted,

Beaming from a mouth whose temples its necklaces adorn,

والانس جنٌ والملائك خرَّدٌ

والجنُّ انسٌ والصفاءُ مَعَاهدُه

And the humans are spirits, and the angels fluttering,

And the jinn are human, and clarity covenants with it,

فكأنما الاكوانُ طراًّ هيَّأت

للمجد عرساً والسرور موائدُهُ

It is as if the cosmos prepared a wedding

For glory, and joy provides its banquets,

هذا هوَ الاثر الجليل ومظهرُ

الخلقُ النبيل فكلُّ شهمٍ

This is the magnificent effect and manifestation

Of fine creation, so every courageous one,

ما في البسيطة للمعارف منهلٌ

عَذبٌ صفا الاَّ وطبعك رائدُه

What is in the Beatrice for knowledge a fresh

Sweet spring, pure except your leadership guided it,

وَصَفُوكَ في صفحات كلّ مجلةٍ

وصفاً حَلَت للظامئينَ مواردُه

And they described you in the pages of every magazine

With a description quenching the thirst of those seeking its creeks,

وتزاحم الخطباءُ في ساحات مَع

هدكَ الذي زَهواً ترنَّح قاصِدُه

And the orators competed in your field

Of struggle, which ambition swayed aiming towards it,

جمعوا فاوعوا في الخطاب وابدعوا

لكنَّ وصفك لن تُنالَ شواردُه

They gathered and were careful in speech and created wonders,

But your description will not attain its goals,

لما رأيتُك في جهادكَ مُفرَداً

يهوى العظائمَ والظروف تعاندُه

When I saw you alone in your struggle,

Yearning for great feats as circumstances opposed him,

الجدُّ يركض خَلفهُ وامامهُ

تمشي الحصافة والذكاءُ يعاضدُه

Seriousness runs after him, and ahead of him

Walks wisdom, and intelligence supports him,

ماضي العزائم لا يردُّ شكيمةً

حتى تنولهُ المرامَ سواعدُه

With resolute intentions, his pride does not falter

Until his arms attain what he desires,

أيقنتُ انك مِحوَر الامالِ و

الأعمالِ في عصرٍ يراعكَ قائدُه

I was certain that you are the axis of hopes

And deeds in an era that makes you its leader,

فاهتك حجاب النثر انك عضُبهُ

واضرب بصدر الشعرانك والدُه

Tear the veil of prose, for you are its adversary,

And strike the chest of poetry, for you are its father,

واثر شعاعَ الفضل انك قُطبُهُ

وارفع سرير النبل انك ماجدُهُ

And cast the ray of virtue, for you are its pole,

And raise the throne of nobility, for you are its glorious one,

واعلم وعلّم واستفِد وأفِد وفُز

واسلم لهذا الدهر انك واحدُه

And know, and teach, and benefit and be beneficial, and win,

And submit to this time, for you are its only one.
