1. الشعرُ درٌّ والخيالُ بحورُ

    والفكر فلكٌ في العباب يَمُور

    Poetry is a river and imagination oceans,

    And thought is a universe swirling in clouds.

  2. ما كلُّ غوَّاصٍ اقاصي لجَّةٍ

    يبدو لديهِ للؤلؤ المذخورُ

    Not every deep sea diver reaches precious pearls,

    Though many seem to find scattered gems.

  3. حاز الفرائد كلَّ عصرٍ بضعةٌ

    مع أنَّ رهط الغائصين كبيرُ

    Every age grasps only a few masterpieces

    Though divers abound in great number.

  4. ما كلُّ من ركبَ الصوافنَ فارسٌ

    يأوي الدِحلَ الليثُ واليعفور

    Not every rider of steeds is a champion,

    The brave lion and nimble deer mate.

  5. لو كلُّ من يسعى لمجدٍ نالهُ

    ما كان بين العالمين خطيرُ

    If glory was grasped by all who sought it

    No deed between the worlds would be great.

  6. وكلُّ من نظَمَ القريض اجادهُ

    ما قيل ذا فحلٌ وذ شعرورُ

    If every composer perfected his verse

    None would be called a master poet.

  7. بعضُ القرائح نفحةٌ علويَّةٌ

    والبعض ريحٌ بالهباءِ تثورُ

    Some talents are a divine breath from above,

    Others just winds blowing aimlessly.

  8. من تلك يُبعثُ للصدور نسائمٌ

    تحيي ومن هذى قذًى وكدورُ

    The former revive hearts when perceived,

    The latter are cinder carrying blight.

  9. يا مَن يظن الشعرَ ماوَزَنَ الفتى

    نظما لانتَ الجاهل المغرورُ

    You who think poetry the meter alone

    Are ignorant fools led so astray.

  10. كم من نظامٍ لم يكن شعراً وكم

    شعراً يقال ولفظهُ منثورُ

    Many a composition was never true poetry

    While excellent verse can be prose.

  11. فالشعر ما ابتكر الذكاءُ مولّداً

    معنىً لهُ يرتاح منكَ شعورُ

    True poetry is what ingenious minds create

    To delight the senses and gladden the heart.

  12. فاذا أتى نظماً فتلك صناعةٌ

    أُخرى جلاها الطبع والتحريرُ

    If it is mere meter it is artifice

    Lacking innate flair and eloquence.

  13. لهجت بهِ الاعرابُ دون تصنّعٍ

    فيهِ فجاء وحسنهُ مفطورُ

    True poetry flows forth without affectation

    Endowed at birth with grace and charm.

  14. تلدُ المعاني النفسُ لا مغصوبةً

    عفواً وفيها نشطةٌ وسرورُ

    It gives birth to meaning spontaneously

    With joy and energy ever renewed.

  15. تلج القلوب بلا حجابٍ قبل أن

    يلج المسامعَ لفظها المأثورُ

    It enters hearts without resistance

    Ere its hallowed words meet the ear.

  16. شعرٌ كما انتظم الحباب ودونهُ

    لذوي الحصافة نشوةٌ وحبورُ

    Like necklaces of pearls in alignment

    To the discerning it is bliss and elation.

  17. هو في الوغى فخرٌ وفي حال الهوى

    سحرٌ وفي وقت الصفا شحرورُ

    In times of strife it is pride, in passion's season

    Sorcery, and in days of peace, cheer.

  18. جلست به الشعراءُ في دَست العلى

    يعنو لهم ملكٌ سما ووزيرُ

    With it poets gained their lofty status

    Served by angels, minister, and king.

  19. ويهابهم في الحرب كل سميدع

    ويثيبهم زمنَ السلام اميرُ

    In war they inspire dread in foes

    In peace bestowed with favor by sire.

  20. فهمُ الملوكُ على الملوك رضاهُم

    غنمٌ وسُخطهمُ اسىً وثبور

    To kings it was dearer than kingdom

    Their pleasure life, their ire, death.

  21. ولقد غدا من بعد ذلك حرفةً

    لهمُ بها يسترزقُ المعسورُ

    After their era it became a trade

    For impoverished versifiers to live.

  22. يتكلفون بهِ ثناءً كاذباً

    مع أن حبل الكاذبين قصيرُ

    With it they falsely flatter for lucre

    Though rope's end awaits all liars.

  23. أضحى سجلاً للمديح وللرثا

    ولسردِ وصفٍ جلُّهُ تزويرُ

    It became a ledger for praise and elegy

    And fanciful descriptions, nearly all fake.

  24. وسطا على المعنى الجناسُ فلم يزل

    ينقاد بين يديه وهو نَفُورُ

    Forced consonance distorted meaning

    As it was led by it unwillingly.

  25. سلكوا به عكسَ المراد جهالةً

    فجرى بضيعة مجدهِ المقدورُ

    Ignorantly they made it contradict intention

    So its splendor and glory were squandered.

  26. هدموا بسوء صنيعهم اركانهُ

    فبدا خراباً بيتهُ المعمورُ

    They ruined its pillars with their misdeeds

    And its ornate edifice lay in disrepair.

  27. ولقد اتاح لهُ الزمان اليومَ من

    يحلو لهُ الابدال والتغييرُ

    But time has now granted it one

    Who reforms it, making change his task.

  28. نهضت به بعد السقوط قرائحٌ

    بأشعَّة العلم الصحيح تسيرُ

    With true knowledge to guide their way

    Talents have lifted it out of decline.

  29. لم تتخذهُ ذريعةً لمغانمٍ

    يوليكها الممدوح وهو حقيرُ

    They do not make it a means for riches

    Bestowed for praising one base and vile.

  30. لبس القريضَ بها طرازاً مُعلماً

    هو في الوضاءَة عسجدٌ وحريرُ

    With it they have given verse an excellent form

    Luxurious as brocade and silk fabric.

  31. من كل مبتكرٍ بهيجٍ مطربٍ

    قد زانهُ الابداعُ والتحبيرُ

    With every lovely and heartening innovation

    Made graceful by creation and skill.

  32. قد عاد رونقهُ القديم مجدَّداً

    وانجاب عن ارجائهِ الديجورُ

    Its old elegance is renewed

    And from its corners waft fragrant zephyrs.

  33. وزكت منابتهُ واخصب روضهُ

    وجلا المحاسنَ رَقُّهُ المنشورُ

    Its roots have been fertilized, its meadows rendered lush,

    And its published graces shine immaculate.

  34. فلتنظم الاقلامُ فيهِ قلائداً

    منها يفيض على المدارك نورُ

    Let pens compose with it necklaces

    Shedding light into minds from its rays.

  35. فبهِ غدا هَومَير بعد مماتهِ

    حيًّا تصوغ لهُ الفخارَ عصورُ

    With it, though dead, Homer lives on after death

    As ages mold his epics from its ore.
