1. يا لسهلٍ بيد الحذق استدَار

    اكسَبت اطرافُهُ الدَوحَ اخضرار

    O plain, circular in the skilled hand's grasp,

    Its edges greened when the morning sun appeared

  2. مذ بدت شمسُ المسا ترمقهُ

    عينها الحمراءُ ولَّت باصفرار

    Since the red-eyed sun began to gaze at it

    Her eye turned yellow and blinked jaundiced

  3. كيف لا تهجرهُ أُم الضياء

    وهي غَضبَى نالها فرطُ الحياء

    How could the mother of radiance not abandon it

    Angry, excess modesty overtook her

  4. كيف لا ينظرها الرآي وقد

    ادركَ الحقَّ بعين الازدراء

    How could the seer not look at her when

    He realized the truth with a scornful eye

  5. وقويمُ الطَبعِ قد عَلَّمَهُ

    انَّ كل الفضلِ في نبذ الرياء

    The temperament corrector taught him

    That all merit lies in rejecting ostentation

  6. وهي لا تفخر الا بالسنا

    وهو يحوي جلَّ اسبابِ الفخار

    Yet she only boasts of brilliance

    While it contains all the causes of pride

  7. فارقتهُ الشمسُ لكن زارَهُ

    الفُ شمسٍ قد توازت نسقَين

    The sun left it but a thousand suns visited it

    Aligned in two rows

  8. لَعَلَعت من ضمن بلوَّرٍ صفا

    ألسُناً تبدي شعاعاً من لُجين

    Tongues flickering from within a clear crystal

    Beaming rays from flames

  9. اشرَفَ البدرُ عليها دهشةً

    ليراها وهو قد اغمض عين

    The full moon overlooked them in shock

    To see them after having closed his eye

  10. يا لهُ من اعورٍ لما بدا

    عاد ليلُ السهلِ بالنُور نهار

    What an eyepatch when the plain's night

    Returned with the light of day

  11. حُشدت فيهِ جموعٌ جمَّةٌ

    كلَّ يومٍ من بنين وبنات

    Crowds thronged in it

    Every day, throngs of boys and girls

  12. زُمَرٌ من كلّ اجيال الورى

    فيهم الازياءُ طُراً واللغات

    Groups from all generations of mankind

    Among them clothes and languages diverse

  13. مشهدٌ ما ان ترى مثلاً لهُ

    في عكاظ العُرب او في عَرَفات

    A scene, you will not see its like

    In Ukaz of the Arabs or Arafat

  14. ماج بالخلق كبحرٍ مزبدٍ

    فيه تبدو الابل كالسفن الكبار

    Teeming with people like a frothing sea

    In it camels appear like great ships

  15. كم وكم من نعش ميتٍ قابلتهُ

    عروسٌ بين شدوٍ وطَرَب

    How many biers of the dead I saw

    Alongside a bride amid melody and enchantment

  16. هي تمضي للاماني والمنى

    وهو يمضي ليوارَى في الترَب

    She proceeds toward hopes and wishes

    While it proceeds to be buried in soil

  17. وقبيحٍ يتصبَّى غادةً

    هي منهُ بين لَهوٍ ولَعِب

    And an ugly lout acts insolently

    Fooling around between frivolity and play

  18. وبليدٍ همُّهُ التحشيش قد

    ضيَّع العقل فغنَّى خنفشار

    And a fool whose only care is nonsense

    Who wasted his mind and sang stupidly

  19. مركباتٌ بسموطٍ الكهربا

    اياتٌ رائحاتٌ في حشاه

    Carriages with electricity’s filaments

    Signs, fragrances in its enclosure

  20. حاملاتٌ كلَّ ريمٍ فاتنٍ

    راج نحوَ الوَجدِ يعدو من رآه

    Bearing every charming gazelle

    Galloping toward passion, whoever saw her

  21. ما رأت عيني نساء التركِ من

    شرفات القطر الا صحتُ آه

    I swear I never saw from the balconies

    Of the train cars Turk women but I sigh

  22. هي حُورٌ قد ثوت في غرفٍ

    وسط عَدنٍ انما دونَ قرار

    They are houris lodged in chambers

    Amid Eden, though lacking repose

  23. قد تلونا الكتب لكن لم نجِد

    غُرَفَا تجري سراعاً كالوميض

    The books have varied but we did not find

    Chambers flowing rapidly like a flash

  24. تنقل الحُور الى روض الفرج

    وسط سهلٍ هو كالروض الاريض

    Transporting the houris to the meadow of bliss

    Amid a plain like a delightful garden

  25. طالَ منهنَّ قوامٌ وشعو

    رٌ لرمي الناس في هّمٍ عَرِيض

    Slender in stature, voluptuous,

    To cast people into ample worry

  26. لا وربي ليس في الوحي كذا

    ضلَّ هذا العقلُ في الامر وحار

    No, by my Lord, it is not so in revelation

    This mind strayed in the matter and hesitated

  27. شيَّدُوا فيه لأسلاك الحديد

    حمًى يصفعُ بالهَول الهَرم

    They erected for it iron wires

    An enclosure that slaps with awe the ruins

  28. تنطحُ الجوزاءَ منهُ رايةٌ

    عُلّق المصباحُ فيها كالعَلم

    From it a flag gores the Gemini

    In which a lamp is suspended like a banner

  29. بين ركنَيه تبدَّت ساعةٌ

    سوف تحصي كلَّ أعمارِ الامم

    Between its corners appeared a clock

    That will count all the lifespans of nations

  30. ولسان الحال منها مُعرِبٌ

    عن مواقيتٍ لتسيير البُخار

    Its condition expressing for it

    Timetables for operating locomotives

  31. سارت الأَرتالُ كالريح تطير

    حوَت ضدَّين ماءً وسعير

    The convoys sped like blowing wind

    Circling water back and forth

  32. تنهب الارضينَ سَيراً مُعجزاً

    بين نَوحٍ وأَنينٍ وزفير

    Plundering the lands with miraculous travel

    Between wailing, groaning, and whistling

  33. ليس بدعاً ان تراها أعولَت

    حينما تبدأ من مِصرَ المسير

    It is no wonder to see them howling

    When from Egypt they begin the journey

  34. كم وكم ركبها من عاشقٍ

    فارق الأحبابَ رغماً لاضطرار

    How many lovers boarded them

    Parting from loved ones out of necessity

  35. حَلَّ في البوسفور منهم ذوهوًى

    أثَّرَت فيهِ تباريح الجوى

    Smitten with yearning boarded among them

    The winds of longing profoundly stirred him

  36. عن بلادِ الشام أمسى راحلاً

    يَدَفَعُ السُقمَ بتغييرِ الهوا

    From Damascus lands he left at night

    Alleviating the illness by changing the air

  37. زاد في الفسطاط وجداً وضنًى

    اذ رآه قد حوَى ما قد حوى

    In Fustat his fervor and longing increased

    When he saw it contained what it contained

  38. عادَ من حيثُ اتى مستعجلاً

    قائلاً في نفسهِ اينَ الفرار

    He returned hastily from whence he came

    Saying to himself, where can I flee?
