1. الأزبكيَّةُ جنَّةُ ال

    فردَوسِ قل لي أم حَديقَه

    The Al-Azbakeyya is Paradise's garden

    Tell me, is it Eden or just an orchard?

  2. حُورٌ حِسان أم نسا

    ءٌ في جوانبها الأَنيقَه

    Fair maidens or graceful women

    Strolling around its elegant sides?

  3. يمرَحنَ تيهاً كالظبا

    ءِ وهنَّ أَحلى من أَمل

    They frolic like gazelles

    Sweeter than honey they are

  4. قد نِيلَ بعد اليأس بي

    نَ ثغورهنَّ بدا العسل

    When they smiled at Yusuf

    He who saw them took off his clothes

  5. لمَّا بَدَونَ ليوسفٍ

    من وَجدهِ خَلَعَ الحلل

    The flames of love played with him

    He cried "My people, it's a fire!"

  6. لعبَت بهِ نارُ الغرا

    مَ فَصَاحَ يا قومي حرِيقَه

    They covered him with many veils

    He who was sweeter than jasmine

  7. كم برقعٍ أسدَلنَهُ

    قد كان احلى من سفور

    Seeing what's underneath them

    Of faces that transcend moons

  8. قد شَفَّ عما تحتهُ

    من اوجهٍ تسمو البدور

    The eyelids with their glances

    Build castles or palaces

  9. والظرُرفُ في اعطافها

    يبني علالَي أو قصور

    Magic has created the most wondrous

    In their eyes, the clearest path

  10. والسحر أبدعَ مُحدثاً

    بلحاظها أجلى طريقَه

    They wrap around their waists

    Arms like iron bars

  11. تلتفُّ حولَ خصورها

    أيدٍ كمحميّ الحديد

    Connected to wings

    That flutter upon a sturdy heart

  12. موصولةٌ بجوانحٍ

    خفقَت على قلب عميد

    The heads lean upon heads

    With the electricity of the new age

  13. تحنو الرؤوسُ على الرؤو

    س بكَهربا العصر الجديد

    And the dance reveals the chastity

    And God knows best the truth

  14. ولرقص يظهر عفَّةَ

    والله اعلم بالحقيقة

    They danced to the melody of the lute

    And the singing of beautiful boys

  15. رَقَصت على عَزف القيان

    وغناءِ ولدانٍ حسان

    And the tunes of the first regiments

    Who asked for safety from the locusts

  16. ومعازفِ الجند الأُولى

    طلبوا من الغيد الامان

    Despite them having opened the countries

    To the edge of India

  17. مع انهم فتحوا البلا

    د بحد ذاك الهُندوان

    They are the harsh-hearted

    But here, always gentle

  18. فَهُمُ القُساةُ قلوبُهم

    لكن هنا أبداً رقيقه

    Circling upon rosy cheeks

    With the purity of a lovesick teardrop

  19. دارت على الخُود الطلى

    بصفاءِ دمع المستهام

    Until when the head was intoxicated

    The body started to sway

  20. حتى اذا الرأس انتشى

    عبثَ الترنُّح بالقوام

    He nearly fell, but

    Was saved by the pulling of the boy

  21. قد كاد يسقط انما

    عَصَمَتهُ جاَذبةُ الغُلام

    Who supported him with his shoulders

    And leaned over him like a brother

  22. عَضَدَته منهُ مناكبٌ

    احنى عليه من الشقيقه

    Is it emeralds under the tents

    Or a carpet of plants?

  23. أزبرجدٌ تحت الخما

    ئل ام بساطٌ من نبات

    Adorned by the hands of girls

    And made more beautiful

  24. قد نَمنَمَتهُ واكسبت

    هُ رونقاً ايدي البنات

    Green lanterns upon which

    The leaves bow down weeping

  25. ومنائرٌ خُضرٌ علي

    ها الوِرقُ شجواً ساجعات

    Or are those dishes that

    Eternally radiate light?

  26. ام تلك ادواحٌ زهت

    أفنانها ابداً وَرِيقه

    Oh, or stars, when they rose

    From the windows of the sky

  27. يا أنجماً لما اطلَّ

    لت من شبابيكِ السماء

    And saw my pearls strewn

    Across the earth, brimming with light

  28. فرأت دراري أُركزت

    في الأرض تطفح بالضياء

    They were infatuated and fell down in shock

    Seeking the truth of the matter

  29. فُتنَت فَخرَّت دهشةً

    تبغي من الأمر الجلاء

    Until when they reached the water of my river

    They touched the bottom, drowned

  30. حتى اذا بلغت مجا

    ري مائِها امست غريقَه

    How many flowers wish to witness

    A stream of flowers beneath the water

  31. كم زَهرَةً ترنو لتش

    هدَ سَيح زُهرٍ تحت ماء

    From the reflected lights elevated

    A river meandering in coils

  32. من عكس اضواءٍ علَت

    نهراً تسلسلَ بالتِواء

    Confused when it finds the ground

    Seeming like the horizons of space

  33. تحتار اذ تلقى الصعيدَ

    بدا كافاق الفضاء

    And thus it closes its eye

    To unravel profound mysteries

  34. ولذاك تغمضُ عينَها

    لتحلَّ أسراراً عميقه

    I have never seen a garden like you

    In whose shade thrones were erected

  35. لم ألقَ قبلكِ رَوضةً

    في ظلها نُصبَت عروش

    Like Charlemagne's palace

    Or like Khusrow's with these carvings

  36. كبلاط شارِلمانَ او

    كسرى به هاتِيك النقوش

    Is this Avalon? Or is it

    Something else entirely?

  37. أأبالسٌ أنتم والا

    ذاك شيءٌ بالسليقه
