سبلتَ فوق العارضَين دموعاً

وأذبتَ من وهج الزفير ضلوعا

You shed tears over the cheeks,

And melted ribs from the heat of sighing,

وهجرتَ من دُور النعيم مرابعاً

والفتَ من دور الشقاء ربوعا

And deserted the mansions of bliss,

And met with the winds of misery.

حييتَ ليلك في العراء مراقباً

في الافق من زُهر النجوم طلوعا

You spent your night awake exposed,

Watching the stars rise in the horizon.

فنيتَ عمرك ساهداً متحرّقاً

متنهداً متألماً ملذوعا

You wasted your life burning,

Sighing painfully, wounded.

الويتَ عن ندمان صفوك هاجراً

طيبَ الحيوة ولم تشا التوديعا

You avoided your loyal friends departed,

Forsaking the sweetness of life without farewell.

ونسكتَ حتى صرت وحشاً نافراً

من بعد ما كنت الانيس وُلوعا

You fell silent until you became estranged,

After you were the most affectionate and tender.

وعصيتَ قول الناصحينوعهدهم

بك في الحداثة سامعاً ومطيعا

You disobeyed the words and covenant of advisers

Who counseled you in youth as listener and obedient.

فعلى مَ ذا والى مَ ذا حتى مَذا

احزنتَ قلباً صار منك صديعا

So why, to what end, how far

Have you saddened a heart that became compliant to you?

قد مرَّ بي ظبيٌ يُجيل لحاظهُ

فرنا وران فرحتُ ثمَّ صريعا

A gazelle passed me, glancing,

So I rejoiced, then fell prey.

ورجوت أن احيي لهُ ولأجلهِ

فيهِ بهِ معهُ نسرُّ جميعا

And I hoped to seduce him, for his sake,

To frolic with him, altogether.

غازلتُهُ جاملتُهُ باغمتُهُ

ناغيتُهُ فأَرى الوفاق سريعا

I flirted, complimented, intrigued him,

I sang to him, and saw agreement was quick.

واحسرتي ابدى رضاهُ خديعةً

ثم انثنى يبدي الجفاءَ مُريعا

But alas! He showed my consent to be a trick,

Then he recoiled, displaying terrible betrayal.

ولذا تراني والهاً متدّلهاً

متنهداً متأوّهاً مصدوعا

Thus you see me, confused,

Sighing, groaning, broken.

عبثاً أنادي الحتف ارجو بعدهُ

فرجاً وَمن لي أن يكون سميعا

In vain I call out to destiny, hoping after it

Relief, and who can be listening?
