1. أنا شاعرٌ والشعر بي

    قد أبلغوهُ أمانيه

    I am a poet and poetry is within me

    It has conveyed my wishes

  2. وبعكس ذلك انني

    فيهِ عدمتُ العافيه

    And on the contrary I have found

    No wellbeing in it

  3. فبهِ شغفتُ كأنهُ

    مرآة حسنٍ باديَه

    So I became passionate about it as if it

    Were a mirror of evident beauty

  4. ولزمتهُ وأبحتُه

    أوقات أنسي الغاليه

    And I held onto it and confessed to it

    In times when I forget my dear ones

  5. وخدمتُهُ ووهبتُه

    في كل يومٍ قافَيه

    And I served it and gifted it

    Every day a rhyme

  6. منها أصوغ قصيدةً

    تحكي رداحاً غانيَه

    From which I compose a poem

    That tells of a singing meadow

  7. بجميع أصناف الدما

    لج والخلاخل حاليه

    With all types of flowing tears and shaking tremors now

    It is five in six

  8. هيَ خمسةٌ في ستَّةٍ

    او سبعةٌ بثمانيه

    Or seven in eight

    So I walk with poetry in

  9. فانا اسير الشعر في

    هذي الديار العاتيَه

    These oppressive lands

    It is inspired to me and often

  10. يُوحَى اليَّ وغالباً

    في الليل بعد الثانيَه

    After midnight

    It is inspired while the eyes of every living being

  11. يُوحى وأعينُ كل حيٍّ

    في المدينة غافيه

    In the city are sleeping

    As if it were a visitor wandering

  12. فكأنهُ زيرٌ يطوف

    على الغواني الغاويَه

    Among the distracted beautiful maidens

    It keeps me up at night sitting

  13. يحي الليالي جالساً

    بين الطلا والباطيَه

    Between the tall and the low

    His tambourine in his hand

  14. طنبورهُ في كفّهِ

    والعُود عبد الجارَيه

    And the servant lute

    Until when my companions are deserted it is better and my beloved falls asleep

  15. حتى اذا هُجرت موا

    خيرٌ ونامت جانيَه

    It ties its feet to me not

    To mourn my feeble state

  16. شدَّ الركابَ اليَّ لا

    يرثي لحالي الواهيَه

    And I who since dusk used to sit in the corner

    With their talk my sad soul distracted

  17. وانا الذي منذ الغرو

    ب اكون حِلس الزاويَه

    Before midnight my eyes can’t find

    Any sleep

  18. في أسرةٍ بحديثهم

    نفسي الحزينة لاهيَه

    And sleep is more essential to life

    Than guests who come

  19. من قبل نصف الليل لا

    تلقى عيوني ساهيَه

    So this wicked one wakes me

    Or my rough nature

  20. والنوم أَلزم للحيوة

    من الضيوف الآتيَه

    And if I disobey he throws ember

    Of scorching fire

  21. فيقيمني هذا الخبيث

    او الطباع الجافيَه

    He has become tyrannical as if

    An unjust king

  22. واذا عصيتُ رمى الوسا

    د بجمر نارٍ حاميه

    So it becomes clear to me that

    I have been afflicted with insomnia

  23. لقد استبدَّ كأنهُ

    ملكٌ عتا او طاغيَه

    So I get up frightened and my soul

    To poetry obedient

  24. فيصحُّ عندي انني

    منهُ منيتُ بداهيَه

    As if the spirit of the poets

    Stays up awake

  25. فاهبُّ مرتعداً ونفسيَ

    للقريض مواتيه

    Or they are bored of

    Instructing the Bedouins

  26. وكأنَّ جنَّ قرائح

    الشعراءِ تلبثُ صاحيَه

    So imagination brings them to me

    As if they are maidens

  27. أو انهنَّ مللنَ من

    تلقين عُرب الباديَه

    And I fall to the ground in awe

    From the void of the abyss

  28. فيسوقهنَّ ليَ الخيا

    لُ كأنهنَّ زبانيَه

    They fill my head with clamour

    And it becomes like raving

  29. وثبت الى وجه الثرى

    من فعر جوف الهاويَه

    And the eye from prolonged wakefulness

    Returns intoxicated and dim

  30. يملأن راسي ضجَّةً

    فيصير مثل الخابيَه

    Until the morning unravels

    The curtain of a gloomy night

  31. والعين من طول السها

    د تعود سَكرى داميَه

    And bid me farewell and left me

    Like a fleeting mummy

  32. حتى اذا هتكَ الصبا

    حُ ستورَ ليلٍ داجيه

    This has been my state since

    My return like growing branches

  33. ودَّعنني وتركنَني

    كالمومياء الفانيه

    And my face has remained luminous

    Like the purity of a clear eye

  34. دي حالتي مذ كان عُو

    دي كالغصون الناميَه

    So may the beautiful and sublime

    Meanings appear to me

  35. وأديمُ وجهي نيّرٌ

    كزلال عينٍ صافيَه

    From a spring, school

    Or song or singer

  36. فلتظهرنَّ ليَ المحا

    سنُ والمعاني الساميَه

    From everything under the sphere

    And in the vacant sky

  37. من مَوردٍ او معهدٍ

    أو أغيدٍ أو غاديَه

    From everything languages have

    Expressed past or surviving

  38. من كلّ ما تحت الأثير

    وفي السماءِ الصاحيَه

    Sometimes in secret at night

    Other times openly in the morning

  39. من كلّ ما لهجَت بهِ

    أممٌ مضت ام باقيَه

    To return before dawn

    To their homes content

  40. اما العشيَّة خفيةً

    اما الغداة علانيَه

    Dressed in what imagination has woven

    The garments of fancy resplendent

  41. فتعادُ من قبل الصبا

    ح الى ذويها راضيه

    Ever remaining novel

    Never to be seen as old

  42. تُكسى بما نسج النهى

    حلل التخيُّل زاهيَه

    As for me the features of

    My body will soon be healthy

  43. أبداً تدوم جديدةً

    هيهات تُنظَرُ باليَه

    What can I do if poetry does not

    Cure me?

  44. اما انا فرسومُ جس

    مي عن قريبٍ عافيَه

  45. ما حيلتي أن لم يخلِّ

    الشعرُ عنديَ عافيَه
