Are you silent or singing, oh my pen
Or have the nights made you mute on the slopes, my blood
Or has the spring of wishes faded, and the splendor of your light
Vanished into darkness?
Or has the weary heart given up its beating
And slept, while time slept not?
Or is it that the dreams of youth have passed,
And you were hoping my youth would last forever?
Whatever state remains with the days,
What pledge of youth does not fade?
I ransom you - what has crossed my mind or my eternity -
That I meet you between despair and regret?
Yesterday you stirred the pools in a land
That stretched out to tyrannical time a hand of peace
Today, since you left the pens untouched
Your rhyme of my world is of grief and orphanhood.
Oh martyr of silence, how many a night
Have I spent composing white pages with my words!
I told the love songs of sleepless ones
Who send their laments forth with the breeze.
And the longing of the abandoned nightingale
I clothed, after the loved ones, in garb of sickness.
You accompanied me in a time that disgusted its companion,
Yet you changed not what I loved of my nature.
You accompanied me in my passion and love’s decree
And none granted me but the lightest decree.
So you were the confidante of my secret in contentment and hardship,
The closest of all to my plaint in deafness.
I lived on the hillside until you and it wearied of me,
And beyond you is nothing but the towering summit.
