1. اسبقي الشمس كالشعاع وثوباً

    واسأليها يا أختها أن تثوبا

    Outpace the sun like a ray and cloak

    And ask her, O sister, to cloak

  2. طال هذا الدجى علينا وحالت

    ضحكات الحياة فينا نعيبا

    This gloom has been long upon us and the state

    The laughs of life in us we blame

  3. كل ليل لا بد يعقبه الفج

    ر فلا تأخذي الحياة قطوبا

    Every night must be followed by dawn

    So take not life to be constant

  4. وانسخي ظلمة المقادير فجراً

    رائع النور ساحرا موهوبا

    And copy the darkness of destinies as a dawn

    Radiant, enchanting, talented light

  5. ودعى النيل ذلك الصامت الثر

    ثار يمرح على الضفاف طروبا

    And let the Nile, that silent laden

    Frolic on the banks blithely

  6. أو دعيني إذا دهَتك الجراحا

    ت سلاما أبادله شوقي المغلوبا

    Or let me, if wounds have tired you

    Exchange a greeting, my defeated passion

  7. وأناديه يا نديمَ الحضارا

    ت سلاما كحُبّنا مشبوبا

    And call him, O friend of civilizations

    A greeting like our infused love

  8. أيّها النيل يا أخا الأزل المج

    هول عفواً إذا جهلت النسيبا

    O Nile, O eternal fellow obscure

    Pardon if I knew not the kinsman

  9. ملأت جانحيك من نكبات الد

    هر ما يمسخ الشروق غروبا

    Your wings filled from the calamities of fate

    That distort the daybreak as sunset

  10. فتفجرت في وجودي دماءً

    وتدفّقت في دمائي لهيبا

    So blood burst into my existence

    And flames poured in my blood

  11. فاحتقرت الحياة يثقلها القي

    د وأقبلت كالرياح غضوبا

    And I scorned life, burdened by oppression

    And came like raging winds

  12. أطلب المجد بالكفاح وأبنى

    بعظامي مكانه المغصوبا

    Seeking glory through struggle, and building

    With my bones its usurped place

  13. ومعى أمّةٌ ممزّقة الحو

    ل تعاني التقسيم والتغريبا

    And with me a nation torn limb from limb

    Suffering partition and exile

  14. أمّةٌ أجرت الليالي عليها

    من تصاريفها القضاء العجيبا

    A nation the nights have passed sentence on

    With their strange destiny

  15. شهدت مولد الزمان وعاشت

    تتحدى قضاءه المكتوبا

    Witnessing the birth of time and living

    Defying its written fate

  16. وقضى اللَه أن تهون عليه

    فمضت تشرب الحياة كروبا

    And God ordained that it be cheap

    So it went on drinking life bitterly

  17. وبنوها أستغفر الحق أشبا

    ه بنيها يصلونها التعذيبا

    And her sons, God forgive, were like her sons

    Tormenting her with torture

  18. حكموا الشعب رغم أنف بنيه

    وأحالوا الدستور برقا خلوبا

    They ruled the people against their sons’ wills

    And revoked the constitution with a flash message

  19. وأضاعوا الحقوق بالقول مكذو

    با وبالصمت عاجزاً أو مريبا

    And lost rights with words untrue

    And with silence, helpless or suspect

  20. ومضوا يعبثون والغاصب العر

    بيد يرجو لرشدهم أن يغيبا

    And they went on fooling around while the foreign

    Arab hopes for their reason to disappear

  21. كم أعانوه خفيةً وجهاراً

    ليردّوا به المصير الرهيبا

    How they secretly and openly aided him

    To restore with him the terrible destiny

  22. وأغاثوه واستغاثوه كيما

    يسحقوا ثائرا ويفنوا نجيبا

    And aided and appealed to him so that

    They crush the rebel and waste the noble

  23. خدعتهم آمالهم فتعاموا

    عن منى الشعب واستحلوا الذنوبا

    Their hopes deceived them and they ignored

    The people’s purpose and allowed sins

  24. فيلناموا يا نيل أو فليموتوا

    إنّ تحت الرماد جمراً شبيبا

    So sleep, O Nile, or let them die

    For beneath the ashes are ardent embers, youth

  25. قل لشعب قاد الشعوب إلى المجد

    قديماً ولم يبال الخطوبا

    Say to the people who led peoples to glory

    Once and never worried about disasters:

  26. ذهب السالف البعيد فهيء

    لك مجداً على الزمان قريبا

    The distant past is gone, so ready

    Yourselves for glory upon the present world

  27. مصر أمّ الدنيا ونحن بنوها

    وعلى حبّها طوينا الجنوبا

    Egypt, mother of the world, and we her children,

    For love of her we arched our backs

  28. انكرَتنا كنانةُ اللَه إن لم

    نتبوّأ مكاننا المسلوبا

    May God spurn us if we do not attain

    Our usurped place

  29. حسبنا الفقر والجهالة والأمراض

    نشقى بها شبابا وشيبا

    Enough are poverty, ignorance and disease we suffer,

    Miserable in youth and old age

  30. كيف يحيا الفلّاح في أرض مصر

    تعسا مجدب الحياة كئيبا

    How can the peasant live in Egypt’s land

    Sad, arid of life, woeful

  31. ويعيش العمال أشقى من البه

    م ومن خيرهم نغذّى الجيوبا

    And workers live more wretched than beasts

    And from their best we feed our pockets

  32. وهناك المنعّمون وفيهم

    يجد الشر سامعا ومجيبا

    And there are those indulged, among whom is found

    Evil when heard or answered

  33. يتغنّون كلما أهرق الشعب على

    الحق دمعه المسكوبا

    Who sing whenever the people’s blood spent on truth

    Their spilled teardrop

  34. إنه منطِقٌ يضيق به العق

    ل وإن كان كالوجود رحيبا

    It is logic that constrains minds

    And though it spans as existence freely

  35. فليك القابعون في معبد الحك

    م سلاماً أو فليكونوا حروبا

    So peace upon those settled in the temple of rule

    Or let them be battles

  36. إن للشعبِ ثورةً توقظُ الغا

    في وتحيي قبل الجسوم القلوبا

    For the people is a revolution that awakes

    The complacent and revives hearts before bodies

  37. ومن الموت أن تعيش ذليلاً

    ضائع الراي حائراً منهوبا

    And death is to live disgraced, confused plundered

    Opinion, wandering, despoiled

  38. ومن المجد أن يدين لك المج

    د قويّاً ملءُ الحياة أريبا

    And glory is that glory bow to you, robust

    Full of daring life

  39. والحياة الحياة قلبٌ وحقٌّ

    فاصحب الدهر رائشاً أو مصيبا

    And life, life is heart and right

    So face time swaggering or afflicted
