1. لك يا وجهي التعيس هجائي

    في صباحي ومغربي وعشائي

    For you, my wretched face, is my satire

    In my mornings, evenings, and at my dinner

  2. أنتَ يا متحف الدمامة والقب

    حِ تنزّهتَ عن صفات البهاء

    You, O museum of blemishes and tombs

    Have rid yourself of the traits of splendor

  3. مع سبق الإصرار صاغكَ ربي

    لعنةً في نواظر الأحياء

    With premeditated intent, my Lord molded you

    A curse in the eyes of the living

  4. حسب عيشي من سوء خلقك نح

    ساً وبلاءً مزوّداً ببلاء

    My life is enough suffering from your bad nature

    Misery and affliction, stacked with affliction

  5. إنّني كلما لقيتُ فتاةً

    صفعَتني بالنظرة الشزراء

    Whenever I meet a girl

    She slaps me with a nasty look

  6. وهي لو تنشدُ الحقائق جنّت

    بغرامي وتيّمت بلقائي

    If she probed the truths, she would be fascinated

    With my love and enchanted by my company

  7. ورأتني روحاً معطّرة الحس

    نِ وقلباً مجمّعا من نقاءِ

    And saw me a soul of sweet disposition

    And a heart gathered from purity

  8. غير أنّ العيون كالناس لا تحف

    ل إلّا ببهرج وطلاء

    But eyes are like people, they are not attracted

    Except by glitter and paint

  9. وعيون الجهال يبهرا القشر ولل

    ب أعين الحكماء

    And the eyes of the ignorant are bedazzled by the façade while

    The eyes of the wise can see the heart

  10. فاعف عنّي إذا هجوتك يا وج

    هي فلا زلت قدوة الصرحاء

    So excuse me if I lambast you, my face

    For you are still the model of candor

  11. إن تجهّمتَ فالحياة عبوسٌ

    أو تهلّلت فهي نبع صفاء

    If you frown, then life is gloom

    Or if you beam, it is a wellspring of serenity

  12. وكفاني أني أعيش بوجه

    واحد في السراء والضرّاء

    And enough for me that I live with one face

    In ease and adversity

  13. ولغيري من الأناسي أن ين

    شرَ في الأرض مذهب الحرباء

    And let others of mankind

    Spread on earth the way of squabblers

  14. مذهب الواغلين في كل عرض

    والمجلّين في سباق الرياء

    The way of those who attack every honor

    And those who compete in ostentation

  15. غيه يا وجهيَ المقبّح عذرا

    فهجائي من صنعةِ الشعراء

    Pardon me, my ugly face, apologizing

    For my satire is the making of poets

  16. ليس دأبى الاطراءُ إلّا لغيري

    وحرامٌ على فمي إطرائي

    My habit is not to compliment except others

    And it is forbidden for my mouth to compliment myself

  17. عش لنفسي خباءها فهي عذرا

    ءُ ومجدُ العذراء ستر الخباء

    Live obscurely, for it excuses you, and the glory of the innocent is to veil obscurity

    Let not the beauty people attribute to you delude you, for it is pure illusion

  18. لا يغرّنك ما يزيّنه الناس من

    الحسن فهو محضُ هباء

    How many an ugly person has attained loveability through noble manners

    And become inclined to the chaste

  19. كم قبيحٍ شأى بأخلاقِه الغرّ ج

    ميلاً يتيهُ بالعوراءِ
