1. أخت أحلاميَ الذواهب مرحى

    بخيالاتك التي في خطابك

    Sister of my departed dreams—welcome,

    with your imaginings that dwell in my letter.

  2. حدّثيني وأكثري واعذريني

    إن نأّت بي الأحداث عن محرابك

    Speak to me at length, and forgive me,

    if events have carried me far from your sanctuary.

  3. حدثيني عن كل شيء سوى الحب

    فإني أصبحت أكره ذكره

    Speak to me of everything but love,

    for I have come to hate even its mention.

  4. واسأليني عن كل شيء سوى الحب

    فإني أصبحت أجهل أمره

    Ask me about everything but love,

    for I have come to know nothing of it.

  5. حدّثيني ولا تظنّي بي الظن

    فما زال لي فؤاد يحنّ

    Speak to me, and do not suppose me in distress;

    I still have a heart that yearns.

  6. لا تقولي إني فقير إلى الحب

    فذكراه في فؤادي تئنّ

    Do not say that I stand in need of love:

    its memory groans within my heart.

  7. أنا كالناس غير أني عرفت الحب

    معنى من السماء عليّا

    I am like other people, save that I knew love

    as a meaning from heaven, sublime;

  8. وهمو يعرفونه شهوات

    ووجوداً مدَنِّساً أرضيّا

    while they know it as lusts

    and as a defiled, earthly existence.

  9. حدّثيني عن كلّ شيء سوى

    الحب فإني لم ألق في الناس حبّا

    Speak to me of everything except—

    love, for among people I have found no love.

  10. وإذا شئت أن نكون حبيبي

    ن فلا تجعلي شبابك ربّا

    And if you wish us to be lov—

    —ers, do not make your youth a god.

  11. اعبدي فكرة من النور عليا

    تستثير الخيال والوجدانا

    Worship a sublime idea fashioned of light,

    one that stirs imagination and feeling.

  12. نحن لم نأت للحياة لنفنى

    ثم تفنى من بعدنا ذكرانا

    We did not come into life to perish,

    and then have our remembrance perish after us.

  13. نحن جئنا لنعبد الله في الكو

    ن وليست عبادة الله لهوا

    We came to worship God in the uni—

    —verse; worship of God is no idle play.

  14. إنها أن نذوب في كل معنى من

    معاني الوجود يخلق صفوا

    It is to dissolve into every meaning

    of existence that brings forth serenity.

  15. دونك الغانيات في كل أرض

    فانظرى كيف عشنَ للشهوات

    Before you are the beautiful women of every land:

    look how they have lived for their appetites.

  16. والرجال الرجال أعماهم الطي

    ن فتاهوا في عالم الظلمات

    And men—men blinded by cl—

    —ay—went astray in the world of appetites.

  17. وإذا شئت أن تكوني ابنة الطي

    ن فلا تطفىء سراج وجودي

    And if you wish to be a daughter of cl—

    —ay, do not extinguish the lamp of my existence.

  18. وإذا شئت أن تكوني كما أه

    وى فغنّى معى نشيد الخلود

    And if you wish to be as I des—

    —ire, then sing with me the hymn of eternity.

  19. ها هنا ها هنا حياة المعاني

    طهرت من حقارة الإنسان

    Here—here—here is the life of meanings,

    cleansed of human baseness.

  20. هذه أمّنا الطبيعة لم يط

    لق سواها من القيود كياني

    This is our mother, Nature; none but she has re—

    —leased my being from its bonds.

  21. ها هنا المعبد الإلهي مذ كا

    ن وكُنّا في عالم الأسرار

    Here is the divine temple, since it exis—

    —ted and we existed in the world of mysteries.

  22. تخشع النفس في حماه وتحلو

    سبحات الأرواح والأفكار

    The soul bows within its sanctuary, and sweet grow

    the flights of spirits and thoughts.

  23. كلّ شيءٍ هنا يمثّل جزءا

    من كيان الخليقة اللانهائي

    Everything here embodies a part

    of creation’s infinite being.

  24. هذه الحبّة الضئيلة تروى

    قصّة السنديانة الشمّاء

    This tiny seed recounts

    the story of the towering oak.

  25. والفراش الوديع في جرمه الوا

    هن كالنسر في رحاب الفضاء

    And the gentle butterfly, in its fra—

    —il body, is like the eagle in the expanses of space.

  26. ووراء الأشياء روح تلبّى

    رغبات الحياة في الأشياء

    Behind all things is a spirit that fulfills

    life’s desires within things.

  27. حلوى هذه الطبيعة كالحل

    م إلهيّة كطفل جميل

    Sweet is this Nature, like a dre—

    —am, divine as a beautiful child.

  28. كل حين تجلى بثوب جديد

    من أعاجيب فنّها مغزول

    At every moment she reveals herself in a new garment,

    woven from the wonders of her art.

  29. كلّما جئتها وعندي سؤال

    جاءني حسنها بألف جواب

    Whenever I come to her bearing a question,

    her beauty brings me a thousand answers.

  30. وإذا ضقتُ ساعة بمصاب

    فلديها تفريج هذا المصاب

    And if, for an hour, calamity constricts me,

    with her lies relief from that calamity.

  31. فدعى الناس يحلموا بالأعاصي

    ر وحيّى معى حياة السكون

    So let people dream of tem—

    —pests, and go with me into the life of stillness.

  32. وتعالى فبادليني صفائي

    وعن الصبر والرضا حدثيني

    Come, then, and share serenity with me;

    speak to me of patience and contentment.

  33. حدثيني عن كل شيءٍ سوى الحبّ

    فإني لم ألق في الناس حبّا

    Speak to me of everything but love,

    for among people I have found no love.

  34. وإذا شئت أن نعيش سعيدي

    ن فلا تجعلى شبابك ربّا

    And if you wish that we should live happi—

    —ly, do not make your youth a god.
