1. قبل أن يبصر الظلام الضيا

    ء وتكون الحياة والأحياء

    Before the light could see the darkness

    And life and the living came to be

  2. كان من كان بدؤه بدء دنياه

    ومن لا يحده الانتهاء

    He who had no beginning began his world

    And he whom no end can contain

  3. كان والفكرة العظيمة حلم

    بعضه الأرض والسما والفضاء

    Was and the grand idea was a dream

    Part earth, part sky and space

  4. حلمٌ يعجزُ الخيال سموّاً حق

    قته الإراده العصماء

    A dream too lofty for fantasy, its truth

    Affirmed by fate’s firm decree

  5. وصحا الكون بعد غفوته

    الكبرى وفي جفنه رؤى عذراء

    The universe woke from its long slumber

    And in its eyes a virgin vision

  6. واستخف الوجود حسن مجاليه

    وهامت بكلها الأجزاء

    And existence took on the beauty of its horizons

    And all its parts were intoxicated

  7. ورأى الله كل شيء كما شاء

    ولله أن يرى ما يشاء

    And God saw everything as He willed

    And God can see whatever He wills

  8. وتراءى فاهتز قلب الروابي وتجلى

    فاستغشت الأنحاء

    And he revealed himself, so the hearts of the devout shook

    And the regions were covered

  9. وتسامت إليه من كل أفق

    صلوات ينساب فيها الدعاء

    And from every horizon prayers soared to Him

    In which supplications flowed

  10. رب هذا الوجود من صنع كفي

    ك فأنت الباني ونحن البناء

    Lord, this existence is made by Your hands

    You are the builder, we the building

  11. رب والكون كله صفحات لك

    فيها الأسرار والآلاءُ

    Lord, and the whole cosmos is Your book

    In which mysteries and blessings lie

  12. رب هذا الجمال جوهر معناك

    فمعناه مستسِرٌّ خفاءُ

    Lord, this beauty is the essence of Your meaning

    A meaning subtly concealed

  13. ربّ والكائنات روحك فيها فم

    داها صيرورةٌ لا فناءُ

    Lord, and beings are Your spirit in them

    Their becoming an unending flow

  14. ربّ كل الأشياء تبنض فيها حيَ

    واتٌ لكنّها خرساءُ

    Lord, though speechless life abounds in them

    Their voices are but silent awe

  15. رب أعجزت فليُذع سرّ إعجاز

    ك صوتٌ تشيعه الأصداء

    Lord, all things in You are made limpid

    A voice to proclaim Your miracle

  16. رب هذا الإنسان ظلّك في الأرض

    شعور وحكمةٌ وذكاء

    Lord, this human is Your shadow on earth

    Conscious, wise, and keen

  17. رب والناس كالقطيع وهذي الدار

    الدنيا لها صحراء

    Lord, people are like flocks, and this earthly abode

    For them a desert

  18. رب فاختر من القطيع حداةً

    يتناهى بهم إليك الحداء

    Lord, so choose from the flocks, the devout

    Through whom devotion flows to You

  19. دينه أنت والحقيقة والحب

    فكل الأديان فيه سواء

    Their faith is You, truth and love

    All religions to them the same

  20. واسقه خمر المقدّس حتى

    تتناسى كيانَها الأعضاء

    Give them the wine of the sanctified till

    Their being forgets its parts

  21. وتُنَوّر له الطريق فقد يعثر

    فيها وقصده الاهتداء

    And light their way, for they may stumble

    Seeking, though, the right path

  22. واحبه من عوالم السحر نايا

    تتناغى بهمسه الأرجاء

    And love them with magic flutes

    Whose whispers fill the air

  23. ويراعا مؤلّمها أبدياً تتساقى

    رحيقه الآناء

    And whose pain their watchdog forever

    Sipping its rich wine

  24. وليكن في اسمه من الخلد معنى

    تتمنّى جماله الأسماء

    And let their name hold a note of eternity

    That all other names desire

  25. قالت الحكمة القديمة هذا

    مطلبٌ لا يجيبه الأرجاء

    Ancient wisdom has said this wish

    The cosmos cannot answer or fulfill

  26. فلتهنأ بما تحب البرايا

    فبحولي الإيجاد والإنشاء

    So take joy in what you love, O land

    For I bring into being and create

  27. بع حين تجرى المقادير بالدهر

    وفيها السراء والضراء

    In time, fate will take its course

    Both bliss and sorrow following

  28. بعد حين ينوح من خانه الحظ

    ويشدو بالفرحة السعداء

    After time, they will grieve whom fortune deserted

    And rejoice whom happiness crowned

  29. لم يكن من تناقض الخلق بدٌّ

    فمحال أن تيتوى الأشياء

    No contradiction was inherent in creation

    For things cannot be made to coincide

  30. كل شيء مسخر لسواه

    فلنور الصباح كان المساء

    All things made subservient to their Creator

    So evening belonged to morning’s light

  31. وشقاءٌ مميّزٌ بهناء وهناء

    يدبّ فيه الشقاء

    A sorrow differentiated by bliss, and bliss

    Shot through by sorrow

  32. وقلوب مخمورة بالأماني

    وقلوب إلى الأماني ظماء

    Hearts drunk on wishes, and hearts

    To wishes dry desolation

  33. والذي يجمع الشتات مثال عش

    قته الأضدادُ والنظراء

    He who brings together disparates, example

    Of His affection, opposites and peers

  34. ذلك الخالق الذي أنا فيه

    قوة يشتفى بها الضعفاء

    The Creator in Whom I find strength

    Sustaining the weak

  35. شاعر الكون لا يقيده الكون

    وإن ضمه تراب وماء

    The universe’s poet, whom no universe contains

    Though made of dust and water

  36. ساحر النور والظلام وكم يسمو

    فتفنى في نوره الظلماء

    Sorcerer of light and darkness, how lofty

    His light makes darkness vanish

  37. هو قلب الحياة يشدو إذا غنّت

    ويبكى إذا شجاها البكاءُ

    He is life’s heartbeat, exulting when she sings

    And weeping when she wails

  38. هو روح مجسدٌ روحه الله

    وفكر عقل هويّه إسراء

    He is embodied spirit, his soul is God

    And the thinking of his mind exaltation

  39. صورته مشاعر الناس أفقاً

    تتلاشى في جوه الأجواء

    His image is people's senses, horizon

    Fading into its hazy air

  40. قلقٌ كالحياة تقتله الأغلال

    وهو المُقَيّد العداء

    Restless as life, shackles kill him

    The hostile chained

  41. ساكن كالفناء يخلق بالأحلام

    مالا يجرى عليه القضاء

    Still as death, he creates with dreams

    Beyond destiny’s appointed lot

  42. يستلذّ الآلام في نشوة الوحي

    وفيها الدواء والأدواء

    He draws pain in revelation's rapture

    In it the cure, the afflictions

  43. طائر عشّه الزمان ومهوى

    جانِحَيه القلوب والأهواء

    A bird whose nest is time, his desire

    Hearts and passions his wings

  44. مِزهرٌ لحنُه الحياة وينبوع أغ

    نيه ما تظل السماء

    A blossom whose song is life, a well

    Whose chant no sky can still

  45. غنوةٌ ذابت الأحاسيس

    فيها وصداها القلوب والأهوان

    A trance in which senses dissolve

    Hearts and loves its echo

  46. قلبه العالم الكبير ونجواه حنان

    ورحمة وإخاء

    His heart the larger world, its tone gentleness

    And mercy and brotherhood

  47. خلقه كالضياء في كل حال

    فهو في الحان والمصلى ضياء

    He made it like the light in every case

    Radiant in love and mosque alike

  48. عقله مسرح بنته المقا

    دير ووشّت ظلاله الأضواء

    His mind a theater that fates designed

    Lit by spotlights from every side

  49. مسرح مخرج الروايات

    فيه من إليه الإحياء والإفناء

    A theater whose director is revelation

    To it belong life and death

  50. أزليّ ممثّلوه رؤاه والأماني

    المجنونة الحسناء

    Eternal actors in it are his visions and

    Wild beautiful dreams

  51. يشهد الليل والنهار عليها

    قصة جنّ دونها العقلاء

    Night and day witness them

    A tale that baffled the wise

  52. قصّة الموت والحياة وكم حارت

    لديها وضلّت الآراء

    The tale of death and life, confusing

    Minds and misleading minds

  53. شغلته عن الحياة معانيها وأغرا

    ه بالدفين الطلاء

    It distracted him from life, its meanings, and lured

    Him to guile's superficial glaze

  54. فاستحال الظهور فيه خفاءً

    واحتوى الكون كونه الوضاء

    So disclosure turned in him to hiding

    As all space he contained

  55. وانتشت روحه الطليقة في الدهر

    بخمر مزاجها الإيحاء

    And his unfettered soul moved through time

    With the wine of its inspiration

  56. ومضى كالشعاع يستبق العمر

    ودنياه ثورة وامتلاء

    And he went like a ray racing lifetime

    His world, ferment and fulness

  57. جامح الفكر مستثار الخيالات

    قصاراه لذّة وانتشاء

    Thought raging, imagination provoked

    Its fruits for him joy and vitality

  58. لذّة الخالق الصغير إذا ما

    أشهدته الحقيقة العلياء

    The small creator's joy when truth

    Sublime beholds him

  59. يسأل الله وهو في ذاته الحي

    رى وجود مشعشع لألاءُ

    He asks God, while in his fiery being

    Radiant with glories strange

  60. فيناديه لا تُرَع إن تعامت

    عن سناك الظواهر الجوفاء

    Calls to Him: fear no neglect if matters

    Hollow feign heedlessness

  61. أنت منّى منذ استوى الكون طفلا

    واستقلّت عن ذاتها الأشلاء

    You are I, since existence was a babe

    And limbs on their own stood

  62. فأنر للأنام ما تحجب الأغلال

    عنهم والشهوة الرقطاء

    So enlighten people what fetters hide

    From them, desire, the base

  63. رسلٌ كلهم وأنت كتابي

    ولساني والوحي والأنباء

    Messengers, all are but my book

    My tongue, revelation, news

  64. سوف تشقى وسوف تسعد كالناس

    وكل الذي تراه ابتلاء

    You will suffer and be blissful like others

    All you see but trial

  65. فاحي للناس لا لنفسك يا شاعر

    واصدح حتى يموت الغناء

    So inspire people, not yourself, O poet

    Cry out till song itself dies out

  66. فإذا مات وانطلقت من القيد

    فعندي لأصغريك الجزاء

    And when it dies, and you are freed

    Yours from me the smallest prize

  67. جنّة عرضها السماوات والأرض

    وخلدٌ يناله الأصفياء

    A paradise as wide as the heavens and earth

    And eternity the loyal gain

  68. لا يهولنك الحديث عن النار

    فإني الرحيم والرحماء

    Let not the threat of hell dismay you

    For I am merciful and compassionate

  69. فأدر لولب السفين كما شئت

    ولا تقهرنك الأنواء

    So turn your ship however you want

    The winds cannot dismay you

  70. فهنا الشاطىء المغلف بالأسرار

    حيث المسيرُ والإرساء

    For here is the shore wrapped in secrets

    Where voyage ends and ties

  71. وغداً تلتقى بذاتك ذاتي لت

    قول الحياة والأحياء

    And tomorrow you will meet your self, my self

    To say: life and the living!

  72. مات فردٌ ممّن شدا الحق

    فيهم أنتم الناس أيّها الشعراء

    One has died of those the truth inspired

    You, O poets, are the people
