O you who complain, deserted by sleep

While tears melt the heart in their lids

This is the night, so rouse the sleeper

And reproach the past for its lowness

This is the night, stillness has covered it

In a cloak, like a spell

It was set ablaze only by the fires of yearning

And the sigh of pleasure and passion

Your hopes are buried in the earth’s belly

You did not rest your heavy head

Your world darkened because of what happened

And the fading star is about to set

You have become like the star shrouded by decline

Though traces of its rays still remain

Wandering on the horizon, bewildered by its nakedness

Its life at the mercy of loss

Love and dreams in your eyes

The mirage of desire shone in its confusion

And poetry and melodies in your hearing

    A never-ending world of deprivation

Your nights were lost in their poverty

Of heart’s comfort and tongue’s silence

Then your stars set after them

A drizzle that ignites the cup of time

This childish time in its play

Is deeper in thought than the wise men’s pilgrimage

You missed what you crave of its essence

And you lived in it like a wandering mirage

You walk oppressed to an unknown

    Beginning and end

How much you are to the days

Like a sign that makes the barren seem coveted

The universe has a curtain drawn over it

Of the darkness of the unseen that is not clear

    Night wrestles day over it

And time follows the steps of the departed

Oh, for the gardens with widespreading shade

That harbor the blooming flowers' dew

The lily knows not the meaning of withering

Nor the fledgling bird the meaning of torment

    Winter came after a summer

And autumn came after the spring of life

It could not withstand the laws of extinction

The raging giant against it is weak

Oh, for the barren expanses, grieving

    Parched, still plains

Night in them is an altar for death

And dawn in them a theater for confusion

Their banks do not allow the onlooker

To discern a summit, dune, or horizon

    Steps precede thoughts in them

And the living and the dead are equal to them

Why do they not complain of barrenness

Or the sinister beast humiliate them

Every voice is of pleasure or pain

And wind either gentle breeze or poison

Oh you who complain, though night's heart

Is leaning on the pillow and pillow mate

The breeze of anguish has borne away your tunes

And the visions of the spiteful have not been absent from you

She who was stingy with the spring of life

That waters the widespread gardens of hope

When her fleeting name lingered on the lips

A myth in the story of the pretender

While you and the universe and what it contains

You are troubled by it and the creatures in it

And you reckon the emptiness you are in

Is your birth and parents' crime

God bless you, what is this you claim

Except the deception of ravenous craving

So go to your Creator, the Originator

And sing to Him the lost hymn

    The hymn of endless doubt

That awakens your dormant revolution in you

And releases melodies in the organ

    To illuminate the dark idea

    Bewildered like the wandering ghost

It is they who raised you in their prison

And you lost the barren market of purpose

You live for the mortals a degradation

While you, you are the commanding master

In your heavenly kingdom above the abyss

Looking down on those you command

Your silent solitude is God's symbol

And your wandering life, time's journey

And your weeping voice, it echoes Him

    A lute enchanted by sadness

What of gardens with widespreading shade

And what of this wasteland in your world

It is you imagination lives in it

Laughing like a madman in your mourning

Gently, the day will not grieve for you

If you burdened the carriers of biers

    This compelling, conquering decree

Is destined for all life's victims

Your life, how beautiful and verdant it would be

If you do not despair over the departed

It passed, so why would you bury

Its memory in the silent grave
