قُلت لِلأَبكَم يَوماً

لَم سميت بِفاسدْ

Once I said to the mute,

"Why are you called depraved?"

قالَ في الإِيماء وَيلي

إِنَّما اسمي حاسدْ

He gestured, "Alas for me!

My name is ‘envious.'"

وَعَلى التَحقيق إَني

شر مَولود وَوالدْ

And in truth I am

The worst son and father born.

وَلنجلي لَقّبوني

بِأَبي البُخل المُعاندْ

My son has nicknamed me,

"My stubborn, miserly father."
