فَاِستَراحَت مِن شرّه عِندَ قَومٍ
عبدت عجلهم إِلَه المَحالِ
So she found respite from his evil among a people
whose calf she worshipped—the god of the impossible.
وَاِنثَنى بَعضُها لِضَرب أَبيه
وَأَذاه وَربْطه بِالحِبال
And some of them turned to beating his father,
harming him and binding him with ropes.
كادَ يَقضي عَلَيهِ لَولا اِشتَراه
مِنهُ قس أَجاره مِن نبال
He nearly killed him, had he not been bought
from him by a Christian priest who sheltered him from arrows.
هَكَذا نصَّ لي أَبوه وَهَذي
بَعضُ أَفعاله الثِقال الطِوال
Thus his father recounted it to me; and these
are some of his grave and protracted deeds.
