1. Whenever difficulties set themselves against me,

I uncover their true nature through reflection.

  2. And even if they emerge in a place of concealment,

in blind obscurity that minds cannot unveil,

  3. veiled, hiding amid doubts,

I bring down upon them reflection’s keen sword—

  4. a tongue like the swelling roar of an Arhabi camel,

or like a keen, stalwart Yemeni blade.

  5. I am not one to stand hesitant among men,

asking this man and that, “What is the news?”

  6. Rather, I master the two small ones—heart and tongue—

judging what remains by what has passed.
