أَنّى رَكِبتُ فَكفُّ الأَرضِ كاتِبَةٌ
عَلى ثِيابي سُطوراً لَيسَ تَنكَتِمُ
Wherever I ride, the earth’s palm writes
upon my clothes lines that cannot be hidden.
فَالأَرضُ محبرةٌ وَالحِبرُ من لَثَق
وَالطُرسُ ثَوبي وَيُمنى الأَشهَب القَلَمُ
The earth is an inkwell, and its ink is muddy water;
my robe is the page, and the gray steed’s right hoof the pen.
