1. مَشيبٌ عراهُ لَو يَدومُ مَشيبُ

    مَشيبٌ بِهِ ثَوبُ الرَشادِ قَئيب

    If only this whiteness of the temples would last,

    The signs of guidance in the garb of old age are few.

  2. قَشيبٌ وَلكِن يَخلُقُ المَرءُ عِندَهُ

    وَيَلقى ضُروبَ الأُنسِ وَهو مريبُ

    Old yet one creates at that age

    The comfort of company while still unsure,

  3. مريبٌ اِذا ما قيل هَل تذكُرُ الظِبا

    وَعَهدي بِجَنبِ الجانِبَين يَطيبُ

    Unsure, when asked: "Do you recall the past,

    And the pact by both sides being good?

  4. يَطيبُ وَتَعدادٌ كَزَورَةِ مُعجِبٍ

    لِعاشِقِهِ وَالزورُ منهُ عَجيب

    Good - and the counting is like an amazed lover's

    Bracelet for his lover, and the counting is strange.

  5. عَجيبٌ وَكَم لَزَورَتِهِ الدُجى

    فُؤاداً سَقيماً أَو يَكونُ طَبيبُ

    Strange - and how many hearts has her nightfall,

    Made sick or it could be a remedy."

  6. طَبيبٌ وَلكِنَّ الحَبيبَ طَبيبُهُ

    يُناديهِ مَن يَهوى وَلَيسَ يُجيبُ

    A remedy - but for the lover the beloved is the remedy

    The one who loves calls him but he does not answer.

  7. يُجيبُ اِذا أَنحى اِجابَةَ مُعرِضٍ

    فَقَلبي لِعَيني بِالدِماءِ قَليبُ

    Answer - if he turns aside with the response of one who ignores me

    Then my heart bleeds for my eyes with tears.

  8. قَليبٌ حكى بَدراً وَكان قَليبُهُ

    يَفورُ دِماءاً وَالدِماءُ صَبيبُ

    Tears - he related a full moon but his heart

    Used to boil with blood and blood is pouring.

  9. صَبيبٌ تحدّى ذا الفخارِ بِخَيلِهِ

    عَليٌّ وَأَنّى لِلوَصِيِّ ضَريب

    Pouring - he challenged the one with pottery with his horses

    Is Ali! How can the successor can be checked?

  10. ضريبٌ يُدانيهِ اِذا حَمَس الوَغى

    وَسهمُ الرَدى أَنّى يشاءُ يُصيب

    Checked - he matches him if the fighting intensifies

    And the arrow of destruction goes wherever it will hit

  11. يُصيبُ مِنَ الأَبطالِ أَرواحَها الَّتي

    تَردُّ ظُنونَ المَوتِ وَهيَ تَخيب

    Hit - from among the brave their souls

    That defy the doubts of death while they fail.

  12. تَخيبُ فَلَمّا أَن تَنمَّرَ حَيدَر

    فَللحتفِ عودٌ في الرِجالِ صَليبُ

    Fail - But when Haydar turned ferocious

    The wood against the brave became a cross.

  13. صَليب كَما أَودى بِعمروٍ وَمرحب

    وَذلِكَ نهجٌ في القراع رَحيبُ

    A cross - that destroyed Amr and Marhab

    And that is a vast method in battle.

  14. رَحيبٌ عَلى كفِّ الوَصِيِّ وَضَيِّق

    اِذا رامَهُ غَيرُ الوَصِيِّ يَخيب

    Vast - in Ali’s grip and narrow

    If other than the successor attempts he fails.

  15. يَخيبُ وَما عَضَّت عَلى نابِها الرَدى

    وَأَما إِذا عَضَّت فَذاكَ نَخيب

    Fails - And repulsion did not bite against its fang

    And if it bites then that would be a drawback.

  16. نَخيب وَاِن عدّوهُ نخبةَ عَسكَرٍ

    وَكلُّ أَبِيٍّ في القِراعِ خَنيبُ

    Drawback - And even if his enemies are an army elite

    And each mighty in battle is a loser.

  17. يَغيبُ مناويهِ بغَربِ حُسامِهِ

    إِلى حَيثُ لا يَلقى الحَبيبَ حَبيبُ

    Disappears - the striking of his sword

    To where he does not find the beloved, beloved.

  18. حَبيب إِلى قَلبي التَشيعُ انَّهُ

    لكُلِّ زَكِيِّ الوالِدَينِ نَصيبُ

    The dearest - to my heart is the Shia path, it

    For all pure parentage has a share.

  19. نَصيبٌ تَهاداهُ المَلائكُ بَينَها

    وَذو النَصبِ مَغلوبٌ هُناكَ حريبُ

    A share - bestowed upon them by angels amongst themselves

    And the adversary there is defeated, deprived.

  20. حريبٌ سَليمٌ لِلجَحيمِ مُهَيَّأ

    إِذا حانَ يَومٌ لِلمعادِ عَصيب

    Deprived - Salim for hell, prepared

    When the day of judgement becomes harsh.

  21. عَصيب عَلى النصّابِ لكِنَّ غصنَهُ

    عَلى الشيعَةِ المُستَمسِكين رَطيب

    Harsh - upon the illegitimate but its branch

    Upon the adhering Shia is good.

  22. رَطيبٌ وَعودُ النَصبِ اذ ذاكَ يابِسٌ

    فَللنارِ في تِلكَ الجُسومِ لَهيب

    Good - And the illegitimate’s wood when withered

    So for their bodies will be flaming flames.

  23. لَهيبٌ بِقَلبي حينَ أَذكرُ كَربلا

    فَيهلكني بَعد النَحيبِ نَحيبُ

    Flames - with my heart when Karbala I recall

    So perishing me after weeping, weeping.

  24. نَحيبٌ اِذا قيلَ الحسينُ وَقتلُهُ

    يَزيدُ وَفي قَلبي الحَزينِ وَجيبُ

    Weeping - when said al-Husayn and his killing

    Increases and in my sorrowful heart, desolation.

  25. وَحَبيبٌ أَراهُ واجِباً بَعد سادَةٍ

    تُغادَرُ صَرعى وَالجَميعُ غَريب

    Beloved - I see incumbent after the Sayyids*

    Left corpses and all are strangers.

  26. غَريبٌ بِأَرض الطفِّ تُسبى نِساؤُهُ

    وَزينبُ وَلهى وَالمَرادُ جَديبُ

    Strangers - in the land of Tuwa their women were taken captive

    Zaynab and Layla and intention serious.

  27. جَديبٌ وَلكِنَّ الزَمانَ سَيَنقَضي

    وَيَقبلُ نصرُ اللَهِ وَهو قَريبُ

    Serious - but time will pass

    And God’s victory will come nigh.

  28. قَريبٌ كَقُربى من عليٍّ ولايَةً

    بِها كُلَّما خفتُ الذنوبَ أُنيبُ

    Near - as the kinsfolk in Wilaya** to Ali

    Through it whenever sins diminish I lament.

  29. أُنيبُ وَمدحي فيهِ قَد طبَّق الوَرى

    قَصائِد عبّاديَّة سَتُريب

    Lament - and my praise in it covered the earth

    Devotional poems opponents will negate.

  30. تُريبُ رجالَ الحشوِ لَمّا قَمعتُها

    كَأَنّي عَلَيهِم أَين كُنتُ رَقيبُ

    Negate - the men of rubbish when I suppressed them

    As if over them I am “where was I a watcher?”

  31. رَقيبٌ وَسَيفي وَاِنتِقامي بِمقولي

    رَقيبانِ كلٌّ سامعٌ وَمُجيبُ

    Watcher - and my sword and my revenge in my words

    Two watchers, listening and answering.

  32. مُجيب فَيا كوفيُّ أنشِد مُجَوِّداً

    مشيبٌ عراهُ لو يَدومُ مَشيب

    Answering - so O Kufan! Chant melodiously.

    If only this whiteness of the temples would last.
