Abu Hashim, why is it that I see you ailing?
Be gentle awhile with the very soul of noble deeds,
that you may lift an ache from the Prophet’s heart
and dispel the burning anguish from the legatee’s breast.
For had there been, after the prophets, a miracle,
you would have been proof of the Prophet’s truth.
Abu Hashim, I did not approve of that invocation,
though it came from one sincere, freely offering it.
For life is no life to me unless you remain unharmed,
with the nights’ vicissitudes turned far from your precincts.
If ever an illness should descend upon your body—
far be it from you, O glory of the sons of Ali—
then call out to it at once, without delay:
“Away from me—turn toward Isma‘il’s body!”
