1. أَنا من شيعَة الرِضا

    سيدِ الناسِ حيدَرَه

    I am among the partisans of al-Rida,

    Haydara, lord of humankind—

  2. الاِمامِ المُطَهَّر اب

    نِ الحصانِ المُطَهَّره

    the purified Imam, the son—

    of the chaste, purified woman;

  3. وَأَخي المُصطَفى وَمَن

    حَسَدَ الفَخرُ مَفخَرَه

    the Chosen One’s brother, and one

    whose proud distinction Glory itself envied;

  4. زوج مولاتِنا الَّتي

    لَم يَكُن مِثلَها مَرَه

    husband of our lady, she

    whose like was never seen.

  5. جاشَ طبعي بِمَدحِهِ

    فَاِستَميلوا لِأَنشُرَه

    My spirit surged to praise him;

    lend me your ears, that I may spread it.

  6. انَّ آثارَهُ منا

    قِبُ في الناسِ مُؤثَرَه

    Surely his deeds are noble—

    virtues whose impress lives among men.

  7. فَهو في السِلمِ رَوضَةٌ

    وَهو في الحَربِ قَسورَه

    In peace, he is a garden;

    in war, a lion.

  8. كَم عَزيزٍ أَذَلَّهُ

    بِيَدَيهِ وَعفَّره

    How many a mighty man he humbled

    with his own hands and cast in dust!

  9. المَساعي عَلَيهِ في

    يَومِ بَدرٍ مُوَفَّره

    His exploits were abundant on—

    the day of Badr.

  10. سيفُهُ صولجانُهُ

    وَهُمُ فيهِ كَالكُرَه

    His sword was his polo mallet,

    and they before it were like the ball.

  11. فَاِسأَلوا عَنهُ أُحدهُ

    وَاِسأَلوا عَنهُ خَيبَرَه

    Ask Uhud about him;

    ask Khaybar about him.

  12. جَعَل البَأسَ درعَهُ

    وَمَعاليهِ مَغفَرَه

    He made valor his armor,

    and his high virtues his helmet,

  13. حَيثُ لَم يُغنِ عامِرُ ب

    نُ طَفيل وَعَنتَرَه

    where neither Amir ibn—

    Tufayl nor Antarah could avail.

  14. كَم غُصونٍ من العُلو

    مِ بِعلياهُ مُثمِرَه

    How many branches of knowl—

    edge his loftiness made fruitful!

  15. كفُّهُ كَفَّت الخُطو

    بَ وَكانَتُ مظَفَّرَه

    His hand checked calami—

    ties, and it was ever victorious.

  16. فَفَدى الخَلقُ كفَّه

    بَل فَدى الخلقُ خنصره

    All creation would ransom his hand—

    nay, all creation would ransom his little finger.

  17. صاحَبَ المُصطَفى عَلى

    حالِ عُسرٍ وَمَيسَرَه

    He kept the Chosen One’s company

    in hardship and in ease.

  18. رُبَّ قومٍ تَغَيَّروا

    وَأَمِنّا تَغَيُّره

    Many a people changed,

    but we were secure from change in him.

  19. ناصِحُ الجَيبِ آمِنُ ال

    غَيبِ لَم يَغرف الشَرَه

    Sincere at heart, trustworthy in ab—

    sence, and untouched by greed.

  20. صاحِبُ الحَوضِ وَالرَسو

    لُ بِها ذاكَ بَشَّره

    Master of the Pool, and the Messen—

    ger gave him those glad tidings.

  21. قَد فَدى لَيلَةَ الفرا

    شِ أخاهُ لِيَنصُرَه

    On the Night of the Bed he ransomed—

    his brother, that he might aid him.

  22. لَعَنَ اللَهُ كلَّ مَن

    رَدَّ هذا وَأَنكَرَه

    May God curse every one

    who rejected this and denied it;

  23. لَعَنَ اللَهُ عُصبَةً

    ناصَبَتهُ عَلى تِرَه

    may God curse the faction

    that opposed him out of vengeance,

  24. نَكَثَتهُ وَحارَبَت

    هُ عَلى غَيرِ تبصِرَه

    broke faith with him and fought

    him blindly, without insight.

  25. تِلكَ أَفعالُها الَّتي

    قَد تَبَدَّينَ مُنكَره

    Those were its deeds, which

    stood revealed as abominations.

  26. وَيلَها لَم تخف من ال

    لهِ في سِبرِهِ الجُرَه

    Woe to it! It did not fear—

    God in its brazen treatment of his scion.

  27. يا تباريحَ كَربَلا

    انَّ نَفسي مُحَيَّره

    O torments of Karbala,

    my soul is bewildered

  28. لِلَّذي نالَ سادَتي

    مِن رَزاياً مُشَمِّره

    by what befell my lords—

    calamities advancing, girded for ruin.

  29. كُنتُمُ بُكرَةً بُدو

    رَ ظلامٍ مُنَوِّرَه

    At dawn you were full

    moons, illuminating darkness.

  30. فَدُموعي بِفَيضِها

    عَن وُلوعي مخَبِّره

    My tears, in their outpouring,

    tell of my consuming love.

  31. كَم مَراثٍ نَظَمتُها

    في المَوالي مُحَبَّره

    How many elegies I have composed,

    richly adorned, for the masters!

  32. اِذ تَيَقَّنتُ اِنَّها

    عَن ذُنوبي مُكَفِّرَه

    For I became certain that they

    would atone for my sins:

  33. كَرِياضٍ مجودةٍ

    وَلِئالٍ مفقَّرَه

    like gardens drenched in generous rain,

    and pearls set row on row.

  34. سِرنَ شرقاً وَمَغرِباً

    حَولَها أَلفُ مِحبَره

    They journeyed east and west,

    with a thousand inkwells circling them.

  35. سَيِّدُ الناسِ حَيدَرَه

    هذِهِ خيرُ تذكره

    Lord of humankind, Haydara—

    this is the finest remembrance

  36. لابنِ عَبّادٍ الَّذي

    أَربَحَ اللَهُ مَتجَرَه

    by Ibn Abbad, for whom

    may God make his commerce prosper.

  37. يَرتَجي في ولائِكُم

    حُسنَ عَفوٍ وَمَغفِرَه

    Through devotion to you, he hopes

    for gracious pardon and forgiveness.
