I have put Mahmud aside for his coldness,
freeing my soul from his friendship.
I had thought he would worry over my illness,
just as I had been distressed by his.
He took no notice of what ailed me, nor even came by,
as though my sickness were his heart’s desire.
Whoever does not look in on me in my illness—
if he dies, I shall not go to his grave.
